DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis title was first published in 2003. Since independence in 1947, India has undergone a phase of rapid urbanization. New planning laws have been passed, new organizations established, public policy documents and discussion papers prepared and a host of land and housing schemes have been implemented. Still, however, the vast majority of urban expansion is an unplanned process that takes the form of squatting and illegal or semi-legal land subdivision. By looking in detail at two rapidly growing cities in Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada and Viaskhapatnam) this book explores cultural, physical-spatial, political and economic determinants of the allocation of urban land and of urban growth in India in historical context. It focuses on the interplay between the government and the organizations in charge of their implementation, and the private sector on the other. Special attention is given to the conditions of the urban poor, with the changes in their socio-economic conditions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKHow amenable is public enterprise to the implementation of national distributional policies? This is the question explored here by Professor Ramanadham. Originally published in 1988, he examines the various channels through which distributional effects take place through their operations, and draws attention to the implicit conflicts of interest among consumers, workers, and tax payers. He focuses on the problems associated with the use of public enterprises as instruments of distributional goals and examines the question of whether direct budgetary measures on the part of government would be preferable. There are detailed analyses of the distributional implications of wage incomes, prices, and surpluses in the public enterprise sector. Finally, the author comments from the distributional angle on the results of privatization. Here is a detailed study of the way in which public enterprise may be employed as an instrument of redistribution of income and wealth, also of the extent to which this is feasible.

So, more micro level studies for each region are necessary for understanding the prospects and problems of artisan units in different regions of our country. The present study conducted in Kurnool District, one of the drought prone and backward districts of Andhra Pradesh, is a modest attempt in this direction and it throws much light on the problems and prospects of artisans and village industrial units in the District. Contents: Present Study-Scope and Limitations of the Study, Introduction and Role of Artisans in Rural Development, Kurnool District A Profile, Implementation of Adarana Scheme for Rural Artisans in Kurnool District, Socio-Economic Conditions of Artisans in Kurnool District, Summary and Conclusions.
