Excerpt from Synthetic Organic Chemicals: United States Production and Sales, 1959; Under the General Provisions of Title III, Part II, Sections 332 and 333 of the Tariff Act of 1930 This is the forty-third annual report of the U. S. Tariff Commission on domestic production and sales of synthetic organic chemicals and the raw materials from which they are made. The report presents statistics for 1959 on production and sales of crude organic chemicals derived from coal, natural gas, and petroleum; of intermediates; and of finished synthetic organic chem ical products. The finished products are grouped according to their principal use-dyes, toners and lakes, medicinals, flavor and perfume materials, plastics and resin materials, rubber processing chemicals, elastomers, plasticizers, surface-active agents, pesticides and other organic agricultural chemicals, and miscellaneous chemicals. The use classifications of finished synthetic organic chemicals are based principally on the manufacturers' annual reports to the Tariff Commission; other sources include trade associations, the chemical literature, chemical dictionaries, encyclopedias, and consultants in the chemical industry. With a few exceptions, the report does not cover organic chemicals (such as wood-distillation products, essential oils, and naval stores) that are derived from natural (vegetable) sources by simple extraction or distilla tion. The Commission has compiled the statistics presented in this report from information supplied by the 653 primary manufacturers listed in part III.
