DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from An Introduction to Latin Syntax This little book is an attempt, based on the experience of several years, first as assistant master at a public school, and then as the master of a preparatory school, to present Latin syntax in such a way as to require less supplementing by oral explanation than is necessary with an ordinary memorial syntax (though for many boys this oral explanation can never be entirely dispensed with), and to make it impossible for any boy to learn the rules as mere forms of words, without any attempt at understanding them. Instead of beginning with an abstract (and therefore, to most boys, meaningless) rule to be learned, each Section begins with a Latin sentence or sentences illustrative of the rule which is to be explained. The master should see that the pupil is able to translate these sentences word for word, and to parse every word in them. When he can do this, he will be in a position to understand the analysis of the sentences which follows, leading him up by a kind of induction to the rule, which is thus only presented to him when he is able to recognise its truth.
