Excerpt from An Introduction to English Economic History and Theory, Vol. 2 The delay in the preparation of the second instalment of this work has been due, partly to the pressure of new and engrossing duties, partly to the difficulties of the task. The book was originally intended to be little more than a compilation; although in the course of writing even the first part some little fresh investigation seemed advisable. But on attempting to put together material for a second part, it soon became apparent that the necessary foundations had not been laid, in the shape of satisfactory modern treatises on the several portions of the subject. I have therefore been obliged in large measure to do my own work of excavation; and not only to generalize from given facts. but also to collect the facts for myself. The first five chapters present what are in the main independent conclusions based upon the original authorities. I regret that I have not been able in every instance to draw my citations directly from the sources themselves. A new edition of the leading textbook on the economic history of Britain since industrialization. Combining the expertise of more than thirty leading historians and economists, Volume 2 tracks the development of the British economy from late nineteenth-century global dominance to its early twenty-first century position as a mid-sized player in an integrated European economy. Each chapter provides a clear guide to the major controversies in the field and students are shown how to connect historical evidence with economic theory and how to apply quantitative methods. The chapters re-examine issues of Britain's relative economic growth and decline over the 'long' twentieth century, setting the British experience within an international context, and benchmark its performance against that of its European and global competitors. Suggestions for further reading are also provided in each chapter, to help students engage thoroughly with the topics being discussed.

Known for its clarity, comprehensiveness, and balance, the latest edition of A History of Economic Theory and Method continues that tradition of excellence. Ekelund and Hébert’s survey provides historical and international contexts for how economic models have served social needs throughout the centuries—beginning with the ancient Greeks through the present time. The authors not only trace ideas that have persisted but skillfully demonstrate that past, discredited ideas also have a way of spawning critical thinking and encouraging new directions in economic analysis. Coverage that distinguishes the Sixth Edition from its predecessors includes a detailed analysis of economic solutions by John Stuart Mill and Edwin Chadwick to problems raised by the Industrial Revolution; the role of psychology and “experiments” in understanding demand and consumer behavior; discussions of modern economic theory as it interrelates with other social sciences; and a close look at the historical development of the critical role of entrepreneurship, both in its productive and unproductive variants. The authors’ creative approach gives readers a feel for the thought processes of the great minds in economics and underscores key ideas impacting contemporary thought and practice. Well-crafted discussions are further enriched by absorbing examples and figures. Thorough suggested reading lists give options for more in-depth explorations by interested readers.

Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 2 The length of the period that has elapsed since the appearance of the first volume of the English version seems to call for an apology on the part of the translator, and he tenders the same herewith. In doing so, he may, perhaps, be allowed to mention two extenuating circumstances. One is, that since the year 1903, when what has come to be known as the Fiscal Question was suddenly Sprung upon the country, the amount of time and energy at his disposal, after satisfying the claims of a very busy Department of the Public Service, has been greatly restricted. The other is, that a considerable portion of the translation had to be done a second time owing to the accidental destruction of a bundle of the completed manuscript during the translator's absence abroad. Excerpt from Economics, Vol. 2 In the first place, production may consist of a rc arrangement of particles of matter, resulting in the crea tion of what some economists call form-utilities. This kind of production takes place in the case of agricultural products, where the particles of matter which were useless to man as long as they remained in the soil, become useful to him when they are transformed into plant tissue and are thus rendered available for food. So, too, a form. Utility is created when useless ore is changed into useful metal by smelting. Secondly, production may consist of a transfering of matter from place to place, or what we may call the crea tion of place utilities. An instance of this is found in the transportation from the Niagara Peninsula to Toronto and other cities of surplus fruit which would otherwise rot uselessly upon the ground. _the creation of place-utilities occurs whenever farm produce is increased in value by transportation to_ the cities, or whenever manufactured articles are increased in value by transportation from the city to the farm.
