Vi), the promise was made that Supplements will be issued every five years, which will include not only the periodicals which have appeared during that period, but also older serials which are worthy of being indexed, and are not included in this edi tion. In fulfillment of that promise the first five-year Supplement is herewith issued under the joint supervision of the same editors. This Supplement includes references to periodicals which appeared from January 1, 1882, to January 1, 1887, and also to a considerable number of older serials which were not included in the edition of 1882. Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: Fifth Supplement, From January 1, 1902 to January 1, 1907 With the great increase in the number of excellent periodicals, growth in the size of these Supplements is inevitable, and it will be noticed that this issue contains ten per cent. More pages than its predecessor. It covers 190 different periodicals as against 170 in the last volume, and indexes 1360 volumes. It will be observed on examining the Chronological Conspectus prefixed to this volume that of the 232 sets included in the edition of 1882 only 49 are continued in this Supplement, while 141 newer ones are here included. Of this number 33 appear in this Supplement for the first time, a portion of these being new ven tures, started during the period or just before its beginning, and others represent ing the effort to fulfil the promise that older serials worthy of being indexed should be taken up in the Supplements. Special pains have been taken to include in this volume references to a large number of college and university publications, making the index of special value to the larger libraries; while at the same time it has not been in the least weak ened on the more popular side. Among these additions to the list, special atten tion may well be called to the Princeton University Bulletin, 15 vols, the Catholic University Bulletin, 12 vols, the University of Chicago Record, 10 vols, the Co lumbia University Quarterly, 8 vols, the California University Chronicle, 8 vols, the Wisconsin Alumni Magazine, 7 vols, and the Technology Review, 8 vols. While these periodicals are quite largely occupied with matters pertaining to the institutions issuing them, such matter not being of value for the purpose of this Index, they also have many papers of importance on live subjects, and it is thought that their inclusion will be appreciated in all the larger libraries. Considerable anxiety has been felt by librarians and others as to the possibility of keeping pace with such conditions, both in the additions to their stock of books and in the provision of adequate catalogues and other guides for the use of their readers. In the course of the discussion and controversy arising on these matters considerable attention has been directed to the question of Subject Indexes, and many valuable suggestions have been made, although as yet little has been effected with general literature, beyond giving the author and subject entries of the books. The Subject Index may be divided into two classes - the one referring to the main subject of a book or work, which is generally set forth upon its title-page the other to the contents of a work which are not apparent from its title and are rarely noted in an ordinary catalogue. Taken singly or individually it will be found that almost every work published in these days. Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: Abridged Edition Covering the Contents of Thirty-Seven Important Periodicals, 1815-99 Poole's Index at present consists of a large volume, often bound in two parts, issued in 1882, with three five-year supplements which bring the work up to 1896 to this must be added three volumes of the Annual Literary Index to complete the series to the end of 1899, making a total of seven separate alphabets, and covering the contents of over four hundred different periodicals. While the unabridged Index is an essential to large libraries, and to students who are desirous of making thorough research in a subject, yet it has long been apparent that there is an im perative call for an abridged Index in one volume for use in small libraries which cannot afford the larger work, and which have but few of the sets of periodicals which it covers. For these libraries a single-volume Index which will cover the periodicals possessed by them, and does not contain many disappointing references, is likely to be of greater value and convenience than the larger and more elaborate work. At the same time a single volume containing the best and most useful Index references will be welcome as a ready and handy literary tool, even when the larger Indexes are at hand and necessary for more complete reference. These considerations have led to the preparation of the present work. Its plan is to cull from the complete Poole's Index and supplements, to the end of the year 1899, all the references to thirty-seven sets of periodicals, choosing those which seemed best suited for the purpose. The list inserted after this preface will show that the sets included are of two kinds first, the more popular standard mag azines and reviews, and secondly, a number of serials representing special fields of knowledge and discussion, as art, bibliography, economics, education, geography and travel, history, industrial science, recreation, and theology. By including both the Eclectic Magazine and the Living Age (the entire sets), this abridgment covers the best contents of the leading English quarterlies and other periodicals not directly included.
