Excerpt from An Historical Discourse Preached to the South Evangelical Church, West Roxbury, June 10, 1860 And now on these plains beyond Jordan, it must have been interesting to recall events that had occurred within the memory of some that heard him; and as memory reviewed a past unlike that of any other people, with what power must the words have come home to their hearts: The Lord thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his son in all the way that ye' went until ye came into this place. But few among the thousands whom Moses addressed could go back to the beginning of their desert journey; and so now, though this church has existed only a little more than half the period reviewed by the Hebrew Law giver, yet the memory of our feeble beginnings are fast fading away. Few of the original actors survive. The Leader through whom God blessed us in the day of small things has gone to his reward, and it is left to a stranger who took no part in them, to glean the few facts still within reach, ere they pass into oblivion. If the sketch is imperfect, you will bear ln mind, that it was gathered from various sources, a fragment here and another there, and then fitted together simply that God's care of us in our weakness might not be forgotten, but prepare us to trust him with a firmer confidence for time to come. As it is written, He will regard the prayer of the destitute and not despise their prayer. This shall be written for the generation to come and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord. Let us commence with a brief allusion to the early history of religion in the town, for in recording a few facts concerning the early days of a younger sister, it seems exclusive to omit all mention of the rest of the family. Excerpt from A Discourse: Preached Before the Synod of Northern Indiana at the Opening of Its Sessions, at Indianapolis, October 10, 1861 Titus, 3: 1. "Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates." These words are addressed by an aged minister of the gospel to a younger. And we, who acknowledge the inspiration of the great Apostle to the Gentiles, must admit that ministers of the church of Christ, in all ages, have here, not only words of truth as to the soundness of the doctrine inculcated, and words appropriate to the ministerial office, as to the exhortation given, but also words authoritative, as to the righteous discharge of ministerial duty. That is to say, the Holy Ghost by the mouth of Paul the aged, commands the ministers of Christ to put their hearers in mind of the duty they owe the civil government under which they are. No man that ever lived had a higher estimate of the sacred character of the gospel ministry than the apostle Paul. If ever a man had a passion for souls, if ever a man thought all other teachings tame in comparison with the spiritual instructions which lead men to the cross, if ever a minister knew truly, the spiritual functions of the church, and the appropriate duties of the ministry; if, in the discharge of any particular duty, any one minister may be a just example to others; - all these things we may grant to Paul. And here one, who determined to know nothing among men but Jesus Christ and him crucified, in addressing a younger minister touching ministerial duties, bids him remind the people of their civil obligations. Excerpt from A Discourse Delivered at the Tabernacle: June 18, 1843 To the enlightened patriot, then, whom the Son of God has made free, there can be no views of our country's posi tion, resources, character, in uence and prospects, which will compass the length and breadth of his conceptions, or reach to the depth of his solicitudes, or to the height of his aspira tions, if there be not throughout the fullest recognition of the liberty wherewith christ makes free, as the liberty towards which every eye and every heart and every hand should be directed, from north to south, and from east to west. And I much question whether there ever was a period of our history, when it was more needful for every patriot and every Christian among us, to think soberly as he ought to think of the welfare of his country, and of the duties, which, as an American citizen, he personally owes to his God and to the world. Excerpt from Discourse Preached at Needham: October 24, 1841 Two objects are here united the most dissimilar in: their effect on the human mind; the one delightful and attractive, the other gloomy and repulsive. We asso ciate every thing charming in our idea of a garden; but decay and darkness, separation and desolation are the natural associations with the tomb. Gardens, in which every rare and beautiful flower and every vari ety of delicious fruit has been cultivated, have among all civilized nations been highly valued. It was in a garden that our first parents were created, surrounded with delightful groves, fragrant and beautiful flowers, and delicious fruits. It is not therefore strange that their descendants should have cherished a desire to perpetuate the blissful scene of innocence and joy. The Romans were passionately attached to their exten sive and richly cultivated gardens. Their opulent men had their gardens so situated in relation to their dwel lings, that in every position in which they sat or reclined. Excerpt from A Discourse: Preached Before the Congregation of the Smyrna Church, of Savannah River Association, First Sabbath, September, 1838 We are now brought to the conclusion, from the testimony of these two disciples, in connection with what Matthew and Mark says in reference to the same interestingcircumstances, that every person who will candidly examine the record, will see the resplend ent Glory of the Everlasting Father, shining in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And now, my brethren, we come more closely to examine the verses which we have read as the foundation of this discussion. And may the Lord of Heaven and Earth, direct our minds in the way of all truth that our reflections may be agreeable to simple truth; that God's name may be glorified, and our souls benefited; that we may be enabled to give Him all the Glory, now and for ever - Amen.
