The career development and decision-making process of student-athletes has been found to be a complex process (Brown, Glastetter-Fender, & Shelton, 2000; Lally & Kerr, 2005; and Sandstedt, Cox, Martens, Ward, Webber, & Ivey, 2004). Intertwined with issues not found within the general student population career development and decision-making process, the student-athlete career development and decision-making process is impacted by internal and external forces that included but are not limited to identity, major limitations, intense scheduling, and the need for balancing multiple pressures. Limited research studies have been conducted to solely examine the career development and decision making of Division I female student-athletes. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven high achieving female Division I student athletes attending an institution of higher learning in Mississippi. A phenomenological study employing naturalistic inquiry was used to collect and analyze data about Division I student-athletes experiences and examine in rich detail, the career development and decision-making processes of female Division I student-athletes who attended State University (SU) in Mississippi. Three main themes were identified in speaking with female intercollegiate athletes about their athletics participation and their career development and decision making. Those themes included: "Pre-Baccalaureate Career Development, College Career Development, and Post-Baccalaureate Career Development." Additionally, there were transitional components found between the themes which prompted movement from one theme to the next. The transitional components were "The Recruiting Process and Transferable Skill Application." The data found that there was great nuance and complexity found in the common career development and decision making process of this high achieving subsection of the student-athlete population.

The barriers and challenges women confront in the sports industry, which represents a male-dominant field, have been well-documented in the sport management literature. However, there is a still lack of research on how women who aspire to work in sports industry perceive those barriers or what supports they receive as pursuing their desired careers. While the majority of research in the sport management discipline examined female sport management students' perceptions of sports careers, female student-athletes' unique experiences in managing the tasks of both academics and athletics would offer new insights into women's careers in sport. Because of abundant opportunities to engage in athletic activities within a team or athletic department, it is imperative to capture and unpack female student-athletes' experiences within both athletics and their majors in examining perceived barriers and supports to careers in sport. Furthermore, the number of female student-athletes has been increasing substantially after the passage of Title IX and various factors influencing their career development should be thoroughly and qualitatively examined from a holistic perspective. The current study therefore qualitatively explored female student-athletes' perceptions of supports and barriers to their future careers in sport through the lens of social cognitive career theory.

Abstract: Division I intercollegiate student-athletes represent a unique population on college campuses due to the demands of being both a student and an athlete. This qualitative study explored how nine student-athletes at a large, public institution college experiences influenced their career decision-making processes. Past literature on student-athletes has focused on academic challenges, the Jock Stereotype, minimal campus engagement, and the lack of ability to make realistic career decisions. This study suggests that student-athletes are aware of the importance to prepare for their lives beyond their intercollegiate careers. From the shared stories of participant student-athletes, five themes emerged, (a) college choice process, (b) academics, (c) campus engagement (d) career evolution, and (e) awareness of sacrifices and advantages. Participant student-athletes stories emphasized the importance of building stronger relationships on campus. The results also demonstrated the need to implement stronger career development services while they navigate the complexities of their dual roles. Policy and practice implications are discussed.
