The 'Recreational Business District, ' identified and described for the first time in this study within seashore resort towns, is typified by a distinctive array of tourist-oriented retail facilities. The seafront location of the RBD is the spatial manifestation of the concentration of recreational activity there; neither the locale nor the type of recreational demand varies significantly among the resorts surveyed. Nine resort towns of southeastern Britain, with their longer and varied historical development, are compared with four southern New Jersey resorts in terms of their retail trade. The objectives of this study are to apply quantitative techniques with the data base of number of establishments and sales floor area and to compare characteristics of retail trade districts of American and British resorts. A survey of the general field of recreational research and a brief review of salient features of the historical background of resorts in general and the selected resort towns is given. (Author).
