Each of the four volumes in this set is devoted to a region, and each region is represented by 19 cities of over 100,000 population. Seventy-six cities in all are profiled. Selections were made based on a combination of magazine rankings (Money, Fortune, Entrepreneur, Sales & Marketing Management, Working Woman, and others) and federal, state, and local statistics; newspaper and magazine reports, and web site data. For each city, narrative commentary about background and recent changes in environmental, political, and employment atmosphere is followed by 60-plus charts and tables citing data in such categories as employment, taxes, transportation, cost of living, housing, education, major employers, and recreation. Each volume also includes appendices providing comparative statistics, metropolitans statistical areas, chambers of commerce and economic development organizations, and state departments of labor and employment.
