Excerpt from The American Journal of Dental Science, 1851, Vol. 2 I deny, positively, the truth of the statement so often made, that caries of the teeth will always continue to progress, after it has once set in, unless every particle of the decayed bone be removed from contact with that which is healthy. I do not believe that, when the cavity of decay is so filled, as absolutely to prevent ingress of the fluids of the mouth, that the disease ever advances; although my observations upon this point are not sufficient to furnish me with decisive proof that it is so. But I do affirm, with confidence, that a series of observations, running through a practice of ten years, have convinced me that in a vast majority of cases, caries of the teeth remains station ary, if the opening of the cavity of decay is well prepared and the cavity so filled as to exclude every thing from it, although decayed, dead and decomposed bone be left in it. After locking the flask, remove it from the press as quickly as possible and place it in a large bench vice, Close as tight as possible, and leave it there to become cold. You can easily understand that I was not long in crushing a half-bushel Of cast-iron flasks; then I experimented with malleable-iron flasks to the tune Of four hundred dollars, -they proved unsatisfactory; brass was too soft, bell metal too hard and brittle. My flasks are now made Of bronze a little softer than bell metal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
