Powered by the company’s industry-leading V-12 engine, the 400 Series Metropolitan with its long, gracefully tapered hood, skirted fenders, classically-proportioned gabled radiator and oversized wheels, was a triumph of industrial design—an eye-pleasing blend of form and function, and the industry’s first truly styled fire engine. This authoritative, thoroughly-researched and richly illustrated book documents the big 400’s relatively short, but spectacular, production life from its introduction in late 1934 through the last two assembled from the parts bin in early 1940.

Tracing its roots to 1796, the Bridgeport Fire Department protects Connecticut's largest city. Bridgeport's first step toward independence occured when the Corporation of Newfield was formed in 1797 for the express purpose of forming a fire company. Through the years, the firefighters have continued to play a significant role in Bridgeport's history. Bridgeport's fire department has grown, changed, and shared in its city's triumphs, and tragedies. The purchase of the steam-powered D.H. Sterling fire engine triggered an oftentimes bitter contest between adherents of the traditional muscle-powered fire engine and new mechanical machines. The contest resulted in the formation of the present career fire department in 1872. Bridgeport Firefighters traces the innovations, incidents, and personalities through the hand-drawn, horse-drawn, and motor-driven eras up to the twentieth century.

The diverse Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation, later named FMC Corporation, made chemical and agricultural equipment dating back to the late 1800s. The Bean Spray Pump Company was an FMC division, changed to the John Bean Mfg. Co. in 1915 and sometime in the late 1930s an orchard owner successfully used his dependable John Bean sprayer to extinguish a neighbor’s house fire. This accidental success story led to the development of the high pressure fog system which helped put out fires during WWII, and soon led to the first High Pressure Fog Fire Fighter body that could be put on any truck chassis. Their success propelled them to become one of the revered names in the fire apparatus industry through the post-war years until their slow weaning of the Bean name and eventual demise in the early 1990s. Although primarily used by rural fire departments as an economical fire engine, many large cities even acquired FMC/Bean apparatus. Portrayed with historic black and white and contemporary color images, this book covers the whole lineup from slide-in pumper and tank combos, to custom-built brush trucks, tankers, commercial and custom chassis pumpers, and even aerials, snorkels and ladder towers.

This beautiful and informative photographic history includes images from 1900 to 1999. Many are often seen (bullet piercing the apple, splashing crown of milk, Sophia Loren looking askance at Jayne Mansfield's plunging decollete, and Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother); but most are probably unknown, because the photos were selected not only for their visual and cognitive qualities but also for their importance to the history and development of photographic technique and usage. The century is divided into thirds for explanation's sake, and there is at least one photograph for every year. While this is a picture book, the accompanying text provides informative introductions to the uses and abuses of perhaps the century's most important medium. The book is companion to the PBS series.
