Excerpt from Algebraic Geometry: A New Treatise on Analytical Conic Sections The recent reforms in the teaching of Mathematics will, it is hoped, be considered sufficient justification for the appearance of a new treatise on Algebraic Geometry, and attention may be called to the following points which differentiate the present volume from its predecessors on the same subject: As it is written for beginners, and for the average boy, the straight line and the circle are very fully treated. The ele mentary ideas of the Calculus have been utilised, and full use made of one of the best of recent reforms, viz., the abolition of the water-tight compartment between Geometry and Algebra. The examples are numerous and varied, and a number of new types have been introduced, such as have been set in recent Examinations. Revision questions which may be taken orally, and Revision papers, are also given at various stages. The use of squared paper is encouraged, and another special feature of the work is the very free use of diagrams. All the most important properties of the Conic Sections are proved, either by Algebra. Or by Geometry, and the book claims to be complete as far as, and including the use of Cartesian and Polar coordinates.
