This report has been prepared for the Alaska Board of Fisheries (board) for reference when considering proposals 246 and 256, with implications for subsistence fisheries during its March 2020 meeting. Proposal 246 asks the board to consider adopting amounts reasonably necessary for subsistence for crab in the Cook Inlet Area, outside the Anchorage-Matsu-Kenai Nonsubsistence Area. Proposal 246 reference "crab," however, due to a lack of harvest data for king or Dungeness crab, this report will focus on Tanner crab in Cook Inlet. Proposal 256 asks the board to consider adopting amounts reasonably necessary for subsistence for king crab in the Kodiak Area.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) recommends updating harvest strategies for the Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi fisheries in the Kodiak, Chignik and South Peninsula Districts. Proposed harvest strategies will update minimum regulatory thresholds used to determine fishery openings and use similar framework and rationale to the harvest strategy recently adopted for Bering Sea Tanner crab. The proposed harvest strategies account for fluctuations in both mature male and female abundance and produce guideline harvest levels (GHLs) in line with historical management practices.
Presents the estimation methods used to reconstruct historic population levels of Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) in the Kodiak, Chignik and South Peninsula management districts.
