In response to the demanding requirements of different sectors, such as construction, transportation, energy, manufacturing, and mining, new generations of microalloyed steels are being developed and brought to market. The addition of microalloying elements, such as niobium, vanadium, titanium, boron, and/or molybdenum, has become a key tool in the steel industry to reach economically-viable grades with increasingly higher mechanical strength, toughness, good formability, and weldable products. The challenges that microalloying steel production faces can be solved with a deeper understanding of the effects that these microalloying additions and combinations of them have during the different steps of the steelmaking process.

This book comprehensively reviews the research on Ti microalloyed steel, focusing on development and production technology. It discusses steel composition design and performance, as well as technologies for controlling the microstructure and properties of Ti microalloyed steel during the production process. Ti can significantly improve the properties of steel, but its behavior is more complex and more difficult to control during the production process than that of Nb and V.Covering topics ranging from metallurgy theory to production technology and products, the book serves as a valuable reference resource for researchers, engineers, university teachers and students in the field of steel research.

The recent decades have witnessed extensive research efforts towards the development of microalloyed steels and several conferences were held on microallyed steels and their applications. The steel industry has revived with multidimensional development in many countries, including India, and has emerged as a highly dynamic sector that continually has to face new challenges. Innovation, cost reduction, energy and raw material conservation are the key issues for steel industry, R&D centers and academic institutes. Microalloying 2007 organized as a part of year-long celebration of the sesquicentenary year of Bengal Engineering and Science University (Formerly, Bengal Engineering College) and diamond jubilee year of the Indian Institute of Metals, provides a forum for technical interaction among the related sectors for a critical review of the development on microalloyed steel and emerging technologies for newer applications and product development to meet the increasing demand of various industries. The conference proceedings comprise a keynote paper, invited papers and contributed papers covering the areas of alloy design, processing, deformation and damage, phase transformation, formability and texture, structure-property correlation, corrosion, and application of microallying technology to interstitial free steel, high strength low steel and multiphase steel.

Tungsten alloying in microalloyed steels is of growing academic and industrial interests due to its positive role in the aspects of microstructural modification and properties improvement. This book has systematically described the functions of tungsten alloying in microalloyed steels. Topics covered include the effects of tungsten on the phase transformation behaviour of microalloyed steels by establishing the continuous cooling transformation diagrams in order to control the expected microstructure and the required mechanical properties; the effects of tungsten on the characteristics of precipitated particles in microalloyed steels; the microstructural evolution of microalloyed steels including grain size, phase component, pearlite interlamellar spacing, allotriomorphic ferrite and acicular ferrite after tungsten addition; the effects of tungsten on mechanical properties of microalloyed steels by means of hardness, impact toughness and room/low-temperature tensile properties tests; strategies for heat treatment of microalloyed steels with the purpose of determining the optimal heat treatment conditions for microalloyed steels with different tungsten additions; improvement of the corrosion resistance of microalloyed steels after tungsten addition; and the effects of tungsten on the hydrogen embrittlement behaviour of microalloyed steels. The text of this book is up-to-date, informative, readable and self-contained. It is not only a technical document that can be used in the research and development of tungsten alloying in microalloyed steels, but also a scientific and valuable literature for the metallurgists, engineers, materials scientists, academics and higher degree research students who make, use, study and design with steels and tungsten worldwide by introducing the latest research findings and achievements of tungsten alloying in microalloyed steels, and considering the metallurgical basis for steel research.
