DOWNLOAD EBOOKSpecialty Steels and Hard Materials covers the proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Developments in Specialty Steels and Hard Materials (Materials Development '82). The main focus of the materials in the selection is on the microstructural detail, alloy design, processing technology, applications, and economic viability. The first part of the title presents the invited papers in the conference; this part includes topics such as toughness in high speed steels and hard metals; the use of vanadium in low alloy structural steels; and design of strong, ductile, duplex low alloy steels. The second part of the text covers topics about high strength low alloy steels, stainless steels, and rapid solidification processing. The last part of selection deals with tungsten carbide-cobalt hard metals, non-oxide ceramics, and sintered polycrystalline ultra-hard materials. The book will be of great interest to students, researchers, and practitioners of materials engineering and metallurgy.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDesigned to support the need of engineering, management, and other professionals for information on titanium by providing an overview of the major topics, this book provides a concise summary of the most useful information required to understand titanium and its alloys. The author provides a review of the significant features of the metallurgy and application of titanium and its alloys. All technical aspects of the use of titanium are covered, with sufficient metals property data for most users. Because of its unique density, corrosion resistance, and relative strength advantages over competing materials such as aluminum, steels, and superalloys, titanium has found a niche in many industries. Much of this use has occurred through military research, and subsequent applications in aircraft, of gas turbine engines, although more recent use features replacement joints, golf clubs, and bicycles.Contents include: A primer on titanium and its alloys, Introduction to selection of titanium alloys, Understanding titanium's metallurgy and mill products, Forging and forming, Castings, Powder metallurgy, Heat treating, Joining technology and practice, Machining, Cleaning and finishing, Structure/processing/property relationships, Corrosion resistance, Advanced alloys and future directions, Appendices: Summary table of titanium alloys, Titanium alloy datasheets, Cross-reference to titanium alloys, Listing of selected specification and standardization organizations, Selected manufacturers, suppliers, services, Corrosion data, Machining data.
