This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Graphs and Algorithms, held in 1987 at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The purpose of the conference was to foster communication between computer scientists and mathematicians, for recent work in graph theory and related algorithms has relied on increasingly sophisticated mathematics. Wagner's Conjecture, self-adjusting data structures, graph isomorphism, and various embedding and labelling problems in VLSI are examples of the kinds of questions now facing the field. With around 65 participants, the conference brought out the depth and diversity of current research in this area. The wide range of topics covered in this volume demonstrates the vitality of the activity in both mathematics and computer science and captures the diversity and excitement of the conference.

This volume collects together papers presented at the 1985 Conference in Function Estimation held at Humboldt State University. The papers focus especially on various types of spline estimations and convolution problems. The use of estimation and approximation methods as applied to geophysics, numerical analysis, and nonparametric statistics was a special feature of this conference.

Ring theorists and researchers in invariant theory and operator algebra met at Bowdoin for the 1984 AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference to exchange ideas about group actions on rings. This work discusses topics common to the three fields, including: $K$-theory, dual actions, semi-invariants and crossed products.

This 1985 AMS Summer Research Conference brought together mathematicians interested in multiparameter bifurcation with scientists working on fluid instabilities and chemical reactor dynamics. This proceedings volume demonstrates the mutually beneficial interactions between the mathematical analysis, based on genericity, and experimental studies in these fields. Various papers study steady state bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation to periodic solutions, interactions between modes, dynamic bifurcations, and the role of symmetries in such systems. A section of abstracts at the end of the volume provides guides and pointers to the literature. The mathematical study of multiparameter bifurcation leads to a number of theoretical and practical difficulties, many of which are discussed in these papers. The articles also describe theoretical and experimental studies of chemical reactors, which provide many situations in which to test the mathematical ideas. Other test areas are found in fluid dynamics, particularly in studying the routes to chaos in two laboratory systems, Taylor-Couette flow between rotating cylinders and Rayleigh-Benard convection in a fluid layer.

An NSF-supported conference in honor of Professor Shizuo Kakutani was held on June 8-11, 1982, at Yale University, on the occasion of Kakutani's retirement. The three major areas of mathematics on which the conference focused were functional analysis, probability theory, and ergodic theory.

Presents mathematical ideas based on papers given at an AMS meeting held at Fairfield University in October 1983. This work deals with the Loewner equation, classical results on coefficient bodies and modern optimal control theory. It also deals with support points for the class $S$, Loewner chains and the process of truncation.

The affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1 DEGREES{(1)}$ has served as a source of ideas in the representation theory of infinite-dimensional affine Lie algebras. This book develops the calculus of vertex operators to solve the problem of constructing all the standard $A_1 DEGREES{(1)}$-modules in the homogeneou
