Excerpt from Address of William C. Brown, President, New York Central Lines, at Annual Dinner of the Railway Business Association: Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, Wednesday Evening, November 10, 1909 There was a time when the fundamental right of the Nation and States to regulate and control the rail roads was seriously discussed and questioned. Happily for all - the railroads as well as the public - this question is no longer open for debate. The question of the limitation of the right of regula tion, the extent to which it should be exercised, is still open for discussion - not in a harsh or hostile spirit, not for the purpose of fixing by law an arbitrary point beyond which Such regulation shall not go; but in a spirit of friendly co - operation to try and ascertain, in the interest alike of the public and the railroads, that happy mean which shall result in the maximum benefit to the patrons of the railroads and the minimum embarrassment in the way of restrictive regulation to the railroads of the Nation. Excerpt from Address of William C. Brown, President New York Central Lines, at Founder's Day Exercises of the Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y., January 11, 1910 I esteem it an exceedingly great privilege, as well as a distinguished honor, to participate in these exercises in honor of the founder of this great institution of learn ing. The name and fame of Ezra Cornell appeal to me with peculiar significance, because he was one of the creators of, and was long identified with, the great busi ness of telegraphy; and his name was a very familiar one to me in the early seventies, when I was a young telegrapher. It is usual upon occasions of this character which mark the milestones in the life of an institution, a com munity or an individual, to deal largely in things of the past, to indulge in remarks of retrospective charac ter; but I am going to ask you to consider for a few moments a subject which I regard as of paramount pres ent interest, and which is destined to increase in import ance with startling rapidity.
