This book, the first academic book on Pakistani documentary cinema, traces the development of activist filmmaking practices in Pakistan which have emerged as a response to the consequences of religious fundamentalism, extremism, and violation of human rights. Maintaining trends of resistance movements, activist agendas, and advocacy campaigns initiated in opposition to the Islamization period and the dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq (1977-1988), contemporary expressions of resistance in Pakistan have also begun to include 'activist documentary' film practices. Documentary films play a significant role in promoting activism and socio-political change in Pakistan. Documentaries created by Pakistani filmmakers have received international recognition and critical acclaim through numerous platforms including the Academy Awards, Berlinale Talents, and Open Doors Locarno. However, in the recent years, filmmakers and audiences in Pakistan have begun to question the influence of international sponsorship on representation of local cultural practices and social issues of Pakistan. These concerns have led to initiatives which aim at decolonizing documentary films created and produced in Pakistan. This thesis aims at understanding that what entails decolonization of documentary by examining how geo-politcal agendas impact representation of the local ethnic, gendered, and cultural identities in Pakistan. In particular, this thesis examines the three dominant documentary traditions in Pakistan through a comparative historical analysis approach. The three documentary traditions examined are: the educational and geographical documentaries produced by the British colonial administration about the Subcontinent (1903-1947), the nationalist and state-sponsored documentaries produced during the dictatorial regimes of General Zia-ul-Haq (1978-1988) and General Pervaiz Musharraf (2001-2008), and the recent activist documentary films produced through international funding and mentorship (2009-2021). Consequently, this thesis argues that colonial and imperial legacies continue to shape the contemporary wave of documentary filmmaking in Pakistan which can be decolonized by approaching documentary as a form of visual anthropology.
