The true story of a German-Jewish love that overcame the burdens of the past. Finalist for the 2017 Book of the Year Award by the Chicago Writers Association “A book that is hard to put down.” —Jerusalem Post “This book confirms Annette Gendler as an indispensable Jewish voice for our time." —Yossi Klein Halevi, author of Like Dreamers "The ghosts of the past haunt a woman’s search for herself in this thoughtful, poignant memoir about the transformative power of love and faith.” —Hillary Jordan, author of Mudbound, now a Netflix movie “An exquisitely written conversion story which expounds upon personal and collective identity.” —Washington Independent Review of Books “A compelling, gracefully written memoir about the impact of the past on the present.” —Michael Steinberg, author of Still Pitching History was repeating itself when Annette fell in love with Harry, a Jewish man, the son of Holocaust survivors, in Germany in 1985. Her Great-Aunt Resi had been married to a Jew in Czechoslovakia before World War II―a marriage that, while happy, put the entire family in mortal danger once the Nazis took over their hometown in 1938. Annette and Harry’s love, meanwhile, was the ultimate nightmare for Harry’s family. Not only was their son considering marrying a non-Jew, but a German. Weighed down by the burdens of their family histories, Annette and Harry kept their relationship secret for three years, until they could forge a path into the future and create a new life in Chicago. Annette found a spiritual home in Judaism―a choice that paved the way toward acceptance by Harry’s family, and redemption for some of the wounds of her own family’s past.

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. (Luke 10: 21) The Bible is a book of hidden treasures purposefully designed so by our God. Many of these hidden treasures are complex, yet they can be understood by ordinary people. Jesus likened this group of people to babes. One of the meanings of babes in Greek is simple-minded. God desires to open the windows of heaven and reveal the secrets of His Holy Word to you. If you consider yourself inept or too simple-minded to understand, then all the better! You are just Gods type, and yes, Hes looking for you. He will reveal to you even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory (1 Corinthians 2:7). Need more proof? Look at what God promises in Revelation 2:17: To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna. May you begin to eat of this hidden manna as you read Windows into the Third Heaven, and may this book be graciously used by the Spirit of God to whet your appetite for more.

Jews, Muslims, Christians, believers, nonbelievers, residents, tourists, and so many others have ocked for millennia to the cultural richness of Jerusalem. It is one of the world's greatest crossroads, hosting the variety that is humanity. From her stunning viewpoint, Michal Safdie invites you to see what she sees every day. Perched up on a hill in the Old City of Jerusalem, along the fragile bor- der between the Jewish and Muslim Quarters, is the home of Michal Ronnen Safdie. Facing east, it overlooks the Western Wall precinct, the Dome of the Rock, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. To the north unfolds the Muslim Quarter with Mount Scopus in the skyline; to the west, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Christian Quarter. Directly under her window is a narrow alley, through which thousands of people pass every day. The alley is a conduit. It is a passage for those entering the Old City through Dung Gate on the south side-mostly Palestinians making their way to their workplaces, schools, markets. It is the route of Christians to the Holy Sepulcher and of Muslim pil- grims during Ramadan, and other holidays, on their way to the Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount). It is also the path connecting Jews residing in the Jewish Quarter and in the western part of the city, to the Wailing Wall (Western Wall). The view from the window o ers two contrasting perspectives. Across toward the Western Wall precinct: vast ceremonial spaces, and the sil- houette of the Old City quarters. Directly below, in the alley and terraces: a great variety of people seeking the sacred as well as the morning and evening cycles of life's routines. The photographs capture personal moments alongside large-scale public events in the city of Jerusalem, where belief and ritual significantly shape day-to-day life.
