Excerpt from A Voyage to Hudson's Bay, During the Summer of 1812: Containing a Particular Account of the Icebergs and Other Phenomena Which Present Themselves in Those Regions The notes which I took during that very interesting voyage, have lain by me ever since; nor is it probable they would ever have emerged from Obscurity, but for the unprecedented interest which the affairs of that part of the northern world have of late excited, and for the present convenient and popular form of publication. Excerpt from The Sea: Sketches of a Voyage to Hudson's Bay; And Other Poems The poems now offered to the public have neither the charm of romantic narrative, nor the zest of humorous description, to recommend them to the general reader. Yet, if their perusal will afford any gratification to more reflective minds, the author will consider that he has not laboured in vain. He has hesitated too long, and has been too cautious of submitting himself to the ordeal of criticism, to feel much disappointed at a failure now; more especially as he does not come forward as a professed litterateur. His productions are the results of a pleasing recreation in the intervals of the duties of another profession to which he has devoted himself for some years. Excerpt from A Summer and Winter on Hudson Bay In a geological expedition to Hudson Bay in the summer of 1909, the writers saw and experienced so much that was new and strange and interesting, that it seems worth while to write a narrative of the ex pedition, principally as a matter of record, but partly also in response to the kind interest expressed by friends in parts of the story which they have heard. It is a plain account of things and events, thrown together from miscellaneous notes, diaries and memories, with little claim to literary form or finish. Excerpt from The Northern Coasts of America, and the Hudson's Bay Territories A former volume has been devoted to the description of the daring efforts which have been made to explore the Polar Seas; and we now proceed to direct our attention to another, and a no less interesting and important chapter in the history of human enterprise - the discovery of North America, and the progress of maritime adventure on the more northern coasts of this vast continent. Without de tracting in any degree from the fame of Columbus, it may be mentioned as a remarkable circumstance, that although the admiral landed in Hispaniola as early as the 4th of February 1493, he did not ascertain the existence of the continent of South America till the 30th of May 1498; whilst there is certain evidence that, almost a year before, an English vessel had reached the shores of North Ame rica. As much obscurity hangs over the circumstances of this early voyage, and as I have arrived at a conclusion completely at vari ance with that adopted by a late acute writer, it will be necessary to dwell with some minuteness on the history of this great event.
