Excerpt from A View of the English Stage or a Series of Dramatic Criticisms This edition of Hazlitt's View of the English Stage contains the whole of that book as first issued in 1818. The articles were selected by the author from his contributions to various newspapers, as he states in his preface, and were reprinted with the very slightest revision from the papers in which they first appeared, but with considerable omissions. They have been compared for this edition with the original newspapers, and those portions which were omitted in 1818 have been supplied between square brackets. The author's own notes are given: those which were in the periodical and in the reprint are marked "Original Note"; those which were in the paper but not in the volume are marked "Note in" (with the name of the journal); and those which first appeared in 1818 are marked "W. H." The dates at the head of the articles are those of the original publication, as that plan was adopted with more or less accuracy by the author. Many other contributions of Hazlitt to these newspapers have been identified with confidence almost amounting to certainty; only two of them are printed in the Appendix to this volume. Excerpt from The Theory of the Theatre and Other Principles of Dramatic Criticism Most of the chapters which make up the present volume have already appeared, in earlier versions, in certain magazines; and to the editors of The Forum, The North American Review, The Smart Set, and The Bookman, I am indebted for permission to republish such materials as I have culled from my contributions to their pages. Though these papers were written at different times and for different immediate circles of subscribers, they were all designed from the outset to illustrate certain steady central principles of dramatic criticism; and, thus collected, they afford, I think, a consistent exposition of the most important points in the theory of the theatre. The introductory chapter, entitled What is a Play?, has not, in any form, appeared in print before; and all the other papers have been diligently revised, and in many passages entirely rewritten. Excerpt from Dramatic Criticism, Vol. 3: 1900-1901 Often crippled and ruined by the philistine limitations imposed by our grandmotherly censorship. The outlook, very dark twenty years since, is not to-day perhaps quite so hopeless, though still, as we know to our cost, the average play produced is far, very far from the high level of excellence which we have a right to expect in the drama of the country of Shakespeare. Having once stood supreme in the world of the theatre, is it too much to hope that England may one day regain that lost supre macy? Whatever the chances, let us at least, as lovers of the stage, remember that we have a high standard to live up to, and do all that lies in our power to remove the artificial and commercial stumbling blocks from the paths of would-be sincere dramatists. These reprinted notices are my contribution to the good work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief View of the English Drama My Dear How. Words are but a poor return for deeds, and yet, as sincere expressions of sentiments, they may sometimes produce substantial gratification, at least to the utterer, and in this belief I dedicate my little book to you, one of my oldest and kindest friends. I do not fear but that the subject is worthy of your attention, for it relates to poetry and the elegant arts; and in these you have been gifted with a pure taste and a discriminating judgment, and to their professors have ever shown a delicate attention and frequently valuable assistance.
