A Single Rose Can be My Garden comes in three parts along with two short essays (Right Little Madam and Golden Nuggets). Part 1, A Penny for Your Thoughts, describes Chris's champion show beagle, Penny. The poems reveal an animal at one and the same time full of mischief, silliness, and fun, as well as one capable of amazing perception, having a sort of 6th sense, and being loving, loyal, and sensitive to an extraordinary degree. This is evinced by the poem, Dog's Will, where Penny is shown to become a one woman dog - although two person dog would be almost equally accurate. Part 2, Gently Down the Stream is a celebration of modern life as the author experienced it in some cases, while in other cases, only imagined/dreamt of it being so. These inspired poems, demonstrate the amazing ability of the author to put himself into another person's shoes, which might also be described as having an instinctive feel for all aspects of life, even those not personally experienced. An example of such a poem is the poem, Babies, as well as, regrettable as it may be, Romantic Love. (at least after a night that, although NOT HIS FAULT, made his life much different than the norm, which is all he ever wanted it to be). The expanded version of the title - A Single Rose Can be My Garden, A Single Friend My World - captures this idea very well!!!!! Part 3, Everything Under the Sun, is a pulling together of diverse threads on a variety of subjects, having perennial interest and relevance, which the author feels he has a good feel for/knowledge of, and can thus offer sage advice on/ be a voice of reason/or be a fountain of wisdom (not youth! LOL!) Of all the poems, the author is most passionate in his abhorrence of war, which he was raised by a German mother who had gone through living hell during the terrible bombing campaigns of civilians during WWII. To relate my feelings on war, let me quote from a well known book, by a Swiss author, called "The Good Soldier Schweik". Schweik, in a desperate attempt to reach the enemy across No Man's Land, shouts: For God's sake don't shoot! Don't you realize there are PEOPLE over here! If that isn't saying something and saying it well...!

“A magnificent romance redolent of ancient wisdom and rich with melancholy, loss, and love” from the bestselling author of The Elegance of the Hedgehog (Le Monde). Rose has just turned forty when she gets a call from a lawyer asking her to come to Kyoto for the reading of her estranged father’s will. And so for the first time in her life she finds herself in Japan, where Paul, her father’s assistant, is waiting to greet her. As Paul guides Rose along a mysterious itinerary designed by her deceased father, her bitterness and anger are soothed by the stones and the trees in the Zen gardens they move through. During their walks, Rose encounters acquaintances of her father—including a potter and poet, an old lady friend, his housekeeper and chauffeur—whose interactions help her to slowly begin to accept a part of herself that she has never before acknowledged. As the reading of the will gets closer, Rose’s father finally, posthumously, opens his heart to his daughter, offering her a poignant understanding of his love and a way to accept all she has lost. “Interspersed with aphoristic Japanese tales from various periods, as melancholy is gradually transmuted into joy.” —The New Yorker “[A] luminous meditation on grief.” —Booklist “With elegant and careful prose, [Barbery] offers descriptions of Kyoto and Japanese culture that transcend the genre of a travelogue. This novel will appeal to readers who long for happy endings and escape.” —Library Journal “The novel balances lush, cultivated gardens and weighted symbolism with mischievous foxes, matcha, sliced eel, and sushi, all forming ‘one happy chaos’ and a fascinating maze of emotional release.” —Foreword Reviews

Can Lawrence Kingston unearth the key to a deadly secret hidden by a mysterious ancient garden inscription in the newest English Garden Mystery? Codebreakers have tried for centuries to decipher the enigmatic inscription on a strange monument in the garden at Sturminster Hall, but no one has ever succeeded. When a murder occurs on the garden grounds, the intellectual puzzle becomes all too real, and Dr. Lawrence Kingston—retired professor of botany and reluctant sleuth—is called in to investigate. Other than a scrap of paper bearing a random sequence of letters found on the victim, the police have no meaningful clues. Convinced that the crime must be linked to the seemingly unbreakable centuries-old code, Kingston begins hunting for clues that will help him unmask the murderer's identity as well as the arcane mystery of the monument. But he quickly finds himself swept along in the dangerous undertow of a centuries' old family conflict and a second murder, by poisoning. What could be so valuable, so important to justify such extreme measures and complex codes to keep sacrosanct for over two centuries? To unlock the garden's dark secret, Kingston must delve into the brilliant minds of three famous men to fathom what part each may have played in masterminding the riddle: an Admiral hailed as father of Britain's navy, the author of England's most celebrated poem, and Great Britain's first Prime Minister. But as Kingston's investigation into an England's past leads him closer to a killer in the very dangerous present, his own prospects for survival start to look less and less assured.

All over the world, the number of singles is increasing. With the rise of the economy, people are able to keep a form of independence. Education and economic status promote individuality. The need to commit yourself to another person becomes less important. In many countries’ women get more space to have their own career and education. The male dominance is fading increasingly everywhere. One of the most important facts in history is the decrease of religious practice promoting male dominance with a following obedient female. Since only around 50+ years women begin to develop a strong sense of independence and are able to get a social position. The social stigma of a single woman is disappearing. One important reason why women more often chose for a single live position is due to the lack of “good” suitable men. Men have built philosophies, religions and believe that women should be followers and obedient to men. When they designed these moral repressive ideas, they did not consider the fact that women could develop above their level. Now many men get hit by their own ancestors. It is an ironical faith.
