Excerpt from A Short History of the Irish Volunteers, Vol. 1 For, despite the Bill of Rights, the privilege of free citizens to bear arms in self-defence has been refused to us. The Constitution of America affirms that right as appertaining to the common people, but the men of Ireland are forbidden to bear arms in their own defence. Where then lies the basis of claim that they can be forced to take them up for the defence of others? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of a Volunteer Regiment A great deal of absolutely vicious nonsense was at this time talked and written about the personnel of the Sixth, and the echoes of these falsehoods have not died out even to the present day. It is too late at this time to trace the origin of these stories; probably they had birth in the fertile brain of some sensation-hunting reporter, and as no one took the trouble to controvert them they nat urally became stereotyped. Possibly, also, Colonel Wilson, being possessed by that essentially American cynic humor which often finds amusement in wild exaggeration, was rather amused at these reports. However this may be, the fact is that the regiment was most unjustly villified, and so in final contra diction of these slanders it is here proposed to give an analysis of the personnel of the Sixth as originally organized. Excerpt from Struggles and Experiences of a Neutral Volunteer, Vol. 1 of 2 It may be well, perhaps, to say a few words as to my own personal sympathies during the franco-ger man war, and thus anticipate a charge of entertaining an interest in one of the two belligerents, incompatible with the neutral position I occupied. Excerpt from Our Nationalities, Vol. 1: Who Are the Irish? Is the question one of Birth, or Blood 9 If birth, the son of Irish parents, when he chanced to be born while his mother was visiting England, never gained the coveted rights; while the equally fortuitous birth of another in Erin, though of English parentage, procured for him the privileges. If of blood, some awkward difficulties arise. A vast number of comfortable officials would have, on that principle, to retire in England were the Home Rule theory reduced to practice. Who, then, would cease to rule in Ireland? As genealogies are not preserved now, except among the landed aristocracy, if reputed Scotch and English were to be excluded from State affairs in Ireland, and the origin be decided by the question of names, nearly all the prominent Irish leaders would be immediately silenced, since they clearly belong to that hated race that conquered Ireland.
