Excerpt from A Practice-Book in English Composition Present day conditions seem to call for a very plain, practical text-book, brief, yet sufficiently varied in contents to provide both oral work and written work, home tasks and unprepared class room drill; a course so contrived that definite, de sirable results may be obtained without over burdening the teacher. Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Enlarged Practice-Book in English Composition The reception given the earlier editions seems fully to justify the unusual emphasis placed upon drill in the correct use of words and the framing of sentences. These are days of care less, lawless speech; we must return to dictionary and grammar. Only through persistent drill in spelling, punctuation, and the building of sentences that are grammatically and rhetorically good can we hope to train our young people to speak and write with correctness and skill. Excerpt from Practical English Composition, Vol. 1 "Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar but not coarse, and elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumes of Addison.** Samuel Johnson. Life of Addison. "Children learn to speak by watching the lips and catching the words of those who know how already; and poets learn in the same way from their elders." James Russell Lowell. Essay on Chaucer. "Grammars of rhetoric and grammars of logic arc among the most useless furniture of a shelf. Give a boy Robinson Crusoe. That is worth all the grammars of rhetoric and logic in the world... Who ever reasoned better for having been taught the difference between a syllogism and an enthymeme? Who ever composed with greater spirit and elegance because he could define an oxymoron or an aposiopesis?" Excerpt from Written English: A Guide to the Rules of Composition This little book pretends to be in no sense a text book of grammar or rhetoric. It tries to give as briefly as possible such hints and reminders as all but the most experienced writers are sometimes glad to have. We have sought, not to treat the subject exhaustively, but on the contrary to omit all but the matters that in practice prove trouble some. A certain mass of errors, due to carelessness as much as anything else, appear in the writing of every Freshman class; and we have assumed that those same errors probably trouble the aver age graduate of the High Schools, whether he is a college student or not. We hope to give here the rules that cover these errors, and Such other hints as may smooth the path of the average writer. Excerpt from Matter, Form and Style: A Manual of Practice in the Writing of English Composition But I may be allowed to emphasize here the principle which has guided me - namely, that in all forms of composition it is with the mass that one should begin at first, gradually paying more attention to the details of form and style. I have felt that many methods of teaching were doomed to failure because they took the component parts of a subject first, each part separately, so that the pupil could not see the wood for the trees. Whereas it would appear more human and humane to get first the creative act, and then shape the thing created. Excerpt from The Study and Practice, of Writing English IN several years of experience in teaching college students how to write, the authors have found that most of the available text books either gave ah amount of material confusing to the student, or explained matters in such great detail that the instructor was rendered superfluous or else was reduced to the status of a quiz master. In attempting to avoid the faults of ill-arrangement and of overelaboration, the writers of The Study and Practice have had the following purposes in mind.
