DOWNLOAD EBOOKPractical Grammar and Composition Thomas Wood Practical Grammar and Composition Thomas Wood This book was begun as a result of the author's experience in teaching some classes in English in the night preparatory department of the Carnegie Technical Schools of Pittsburg. The pupils in those classes were all adults, and needed only such a course as would enable them to express themselves in clear and correct English. English Grammar, with them, was not to be preliminary to the grammar of another language, and composition was not to be studied beyond the everyday needs of the practical man. Great difficulty was experienced because of inability to secure a text that was suited to the needs of the class. A book was needed that would be simple, direct and dignified; that would cover grammar, and the essential principles of sentence structure, choice of words, and general composition; that would deal particularly with the sources of frequent error, and would omit the non-essential points; and, finally that would contain an abundance of exercises and practical work. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Practical English Composition, Vol. 1 "Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar but not coarse, and elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumes of Addison.** Samuel Johnson. Life of Addison. "Children learn to speak by watching the lips and catching the words of those who know how already; and poets learn in the same way from their elders." James Russell Lowell. Essay on Chaucer. "Grammars of rhetoric and grammars of logic arc among the most useless furniture of a shelf. Give a boy Robinson Crusoe. That is worth all the grammars of rhetoric and logic in the world... Who ever reasoned better for having been taught the difference between a syllogism and an enthymeme? Who ever composed with greater spirit and elegance because he could define an oxymoron or an aposiopesis?" DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Written and Spoken English, Vol. 1: A Course in Composition and Rhetoric Part II is a carefully organized summary of illustrated rules in punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, and diction, intended for daily reference. A Key to these rules is given on pages 288 - 291 to aid the teacher in mark ing themes, and the method is illustrated on page 287. The teacher will place a rule number on the pupil's theme opposite an error. The pupil will study the rule and then correct his theme, thus learning the principle in the most practical way. Learn to do by doing well is the message this book has for the pupil. The author is convinced that careless theme writing does the pupil more harm than good, and that the habitual use of improper diction or incorrect sentence construction in classroom exercises often fixes bad habits so thoroughly in the mind of the pupil that they remain with him through life. Throughout the book, therefore, he correlates composition work with grammatical and rhetorical theory, and at all times he insists that the pupil write the themes carefully and neatly and then correct the errors after the teacher has indicated where they are.
