This book contains all refereed papers accepted during the 14th International Conference on Complex Systems Design & Management CSD&M 2023 that took place in Beijing, People’s Republic of China by the end October 2023. Mastering complex systems requires an integrated understanding of industrial practices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. This explains the creation of an annual go-between European and Asian forum dedicated to academic researchers and industrial actors working on complex industrial systems architecting, modeling and engineering. These proceedings cover the most recent trends in the emerging field of complex systems, both from an academic and professional perspective. A special focus was put this year on “New Trends in Complex Systems Engineering.” The CSD&M series of conferences were initiated under the guidance of CESAM Community in Europe, managed by CESAMES. Its Asian version took place in Singapore for three consecutive sessions during 2014 and 2018. The fourth Asian edition was held in Beijing in hybrid with the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics (CSAA) as the co-organizer in 2021. Since 2023, its European and Asian conferences merge into one, taking place in China and Europe in turn. CESAM Community aims in organizing the sharing of good practices in systems architecting and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and certifying the level of knowledge and proficiency in this field through the CESAM certification. The CESAM systems architecting, and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) certification is especially currently the most disseminated professional certification in the world in this domain through more than 3,000 real complex system development projects on which it was operationally deployed and around 10,000 engineers who were trained on the CESAM framework at international level.

Defining a new development life-cycle methodology, together with a set of associated techniques and tools to develop highly critical systems using formal techniques, this book adopts a rigorous safety assessment approach explored via several layers (from requirements analysis to automatic source code generation). This is assessed and evaluated via a standard case study: the cardiac pacemaker. Additionally a formalisation of an Electrocardiogram (ECG) is used to identify anomalies in order to improve existing medical protocols. This allows the key issue - that formal methods are not currently integrated into established critical systems development processes - to be discussed in a highly effective and informative way. Using Event-B for Critical Device Software Systems serves as a valuable resource for researchers and students of formal methods. The assessment of critical systems development is applicable to all industries, but engineers and physicians from the health domain will find the cardiac pacemaker case study of particular value.

Utilize a new layers-based development model for embedded systems using Agile techniques for software architecture and management. Firmware is comprised of both hardware and software, but the applicability of Agile in embedded systems development is new. This book provides a step-by-step process showing how this is possible. The book details how the moving parts in embedded systems development affect one another and shows how to properly use both engineering tools and new tools and methods to reduce waste, rework, and product time-to-market. Software is seen not as a commodity but a conduit to facilitate valuable product knowledge flow across the company into the hands of the customer. Embedded Systems Architecture for Agile Development starts off by reviewing the Layers model used in other engineering disciplines, as well as its advantages and applicability to embedded systems development. It outlines development models from project-based methodologies (e.g., collaborative product development) to the newer modern development visions (e.g., Agile) in software and various tools and methods that can help with a Layers model implementation. The book covers requirement modeling for embedded systems (Hatley-Pirbhai Method) and how adapting the HP Method with the help of the tools discussed in this book can be seen as a practical example for a complete embedded system. What You’ll Learn Identify the major software parts involved in building a typical modern firmware Assign a layer to each software part so each layer can be separate from another and there won’t be interdependencies between them Systematically and logically create these layers based on the customer requirements Use Model-Based Design (MBD) to create an active system architecture that is more accepting of changes Who This Book Is For Firmware engineers; systems architects; hardware and software managers, developers, designers, and architects; program managers; project managers; Agile practitioners; and manufacturing engineers and managers. The secondary audience includes research engineers and managers, and engineering and manufacturing managers.

Under the same cover, this volume offers both modern and classic papers focusing on real-time systems design and analysis. Rather than focusing in theoretical observations of real-time systems, it is intended for the practical professional who is building real real-time systems. The editor, himself the author of a course on real-time systems, has selected articles to provide a deep exploration of issues raised in his other works. In particular, emphasis is placed on applying practical, but theoretically sound approaches in software engineering rate-monotonic design and analysis, testing and architecting systems for real-time applications.
