Excerpt from A Manual, Prepared for the Use of a Private School A good introductory history Of England is very much needed, but is not likely to be soon furnished. Worcester's History is excellent, but is intended to be only a sketch. Goldsmith's History is not without the peculiar merits Of its author's style, but it is very imperfect. Keightley's History seems to be, on the whole, as good a compend as we have; but the American editor has taken some liberties with the original text. Hume's History, which ter minates with the Revolution of 1688, though vary ing in interest and by no means free from prejudices, is in so many respects skilfully executed, that it has never been superseded. Its occasional sketches Of continental transactions add greatly to its value. Mackintosh's History, which comes down to the year 1572, must not be overlooked; and Lingard's History, which stops at 1688, is, notwithstanding its decided leaning to Romanism, a very able and well written work. The Pictorial History Of England contains much valuable information. Macaulay's as yet unfinished History properly begins with the reign Of James IL, but it contains a review of the preced ing period. Lord Mahon's History, which com mences with the accession Of the House of Hanover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
