Excerpt from A Manual of General Pathology: Students and Practitioners During the five years that have elapsed since the publication of the First Edition, so much work has been done in General Pathology that the Second Edition differs materially from the original volume. Moreover, during the interval I have published a 'Textbook on Pathological Anatomy and Histology.' Not only, therefore, has much of the matter been altered, but also the entire form of the work has been changed, so that the 'General or Experimental Pathology' now constitutes in large measure a complementary volume to the ' Pathological Anatomy and Histology.' In the present volume itself the most important changes are a great condensation of the chapter on the pathology of Ĺ“dema, a remodelling of the later portion of the chapter on infection and immunity so as to include a description of the 'side-chain' theory of Ehrlich, the introduction of a short chapter on some of the more important animal micro-parasites, and the insertion of a small number of illustrations and diagrams. I trust that these changes may prove acceptable to the reader. That the work of revision has not proved a small one, is perhaps evidenced by the fact that the 'Index of Authors' in this edition contains nearly two hundred more names than it did in the last. In the troublesome work of proof-reading I have received invaluable help from Mr. W. T. Hillier, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., my first pathological assistant, and for this help I tender him my cordial thanks.
