DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this book Thomas H. Bestul constructs the literary history of the Latin Passion narratives, placing them within their social, cultural, and historical contexts. He examines the ways in which the Passion is narrated and renarrated in devotional treatises, paying particular attention to the modifications and enlargements of the narrative of the Passion as it is presented in the canonical gospels. Of particular interest to Bestul are the representations of Jews, women, and the body of the crucified Christ. Bestul argues that the greatly enlarged role of the Jews in the Passion narratives of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is connected to the rising anti-Judaism of the period. He explores how the representations of women, particularly the Virgin Mary, express cultural values about the place of women in late medieval society and reveal an increased interest in female subjectivity.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this first comprehensive study of the Latin Passion play, Professor Sticca examines the medieval liturgical ceremonies commemorating the events in Christ's Passion and traces their gradual change in character from the contemplative to the dramatic. The author shows that while Christ's Passion became increasingly popular as one of the sacred mysteries beginning in the tenth century, new forces that allowed a more eloquent and humane visualization and description of Christ's anguish first appeared in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Professor Sticca analyzes the earliest extant Latin Passion play, the twelfth-century Montecassino codex, and compares it with other Latin and vernacular Passion plays. He refutes the traditional view that the Planctus Mariae is the germinal point of the Latin Passion play and then offers a new theory of its inception. As a literary form, the Latin Passion play appears to Professor Sticca as a creation of the Montecassino monastic circle which was inspired by the liturgical services of Good Friday and the Gospel accounts. Particularly influential also were three themes that developed in the eleventh century: in liturgy, a concentration on Christocentric piety; in art, a more humanistic treatment of Christ; and in literature, a consideration of the scenes of the Passion as dramatic and human episodes. In the course of this investigation, Professor Sticca also reappraises traditional views of the origin of the medieval liturgical drama, indicating that it should not be traced exclusively to the tropes from the schools of St. Gall and St. Martial of Limoges, but rather to a number of sources.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKPerpetua was a young African woman who fell in with an obscure religious sect that must have seemed to outsiders like a kind of death-cult. She was arrested around 203 CE along with several other practitioners on unspecified charges. Given the opportunity to renounce the group and walk free, Perpetua chose execution in the arena. Perpetua was a Christian. The Passi?, an account of her death, includes Perpetua's prison diary, in which the already-radicalized woman describes her progressive alienation from her family. Perpetua was a prophet and a leader in her sect, and her narrative describes a series of visions: a ladder rigged with lacerating blades and tearing hooks, the torment of a family member, and a final climactic vision in which she becomes a man and fights hand-to-hand against the devil. Transgressive, radical, and determined to face down a violent death: Perpetua is a formidable figure. This edition aims to enable intermediate-level students of Latin to read the text in its original language. A substantial introduction provides background on the woman, her text, and her times. The Latin text includes a running glossary and grammatical commentary on every page.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKHow many times have you heard the term "Latin Lover?" What images does it bring to mind? If you're like most, you're imagining heated, lusty affairs and romantic, one-night stands. Latin Lovers: Do We Really Exist?, written by Pablo Castañeda, a native Guatemalan, redefines the Latin Lover as one having far more depth than today's society would lead you to believe. Castañeda argues that the Latin heart is fueled by a much stronger passion that longs to greet each second of life with love and enthusiasm. Pablo believes that women have intrinsic value and that men are truly blessed when they simply follow their hearts and love the woman in their life. He insists that through the years, his contact with women all over the world has both inspired him to be a better man and prepared him to be a better husband. He believes that each love relationship has its own magic, its own mystery, and its own story to tell. He shares the relationships he has cultivated with women and the invaluable lessons he's gleaned from each romance. Pablo relates how his God given passion for life is rooted in his Latin culture. He recounts how his family, music, dancing, and coffee have all played a huge role in shaping him into the man he is today. He shares how the change God brought about in his life has shown him the importance of dedicating time to get to know his heart. In conclusion, Pablo discloses the only way of becoming a real "Latin Lover". He implores you to join him in his journey and in so doing, perhaps find some answers in your own life.
