Author's Note: This book started out with the intention of being a short, simple guide to Keeping Australian Scorpions as it was apparent nothing in print was available to help those interested in Scorpion Husbandry. It seemed to me that one of the big magnets to keeping scorpions was their amazing biology, and so it seemed imperative the keeper would want to know more about aspects of life history, diversity, species and more and so this book developed into far more than was originally planned. And I'm glad it did. The reader will derive a lot more knowledge from this text than a basic keeping guide. To be the best keeper of scorpions and really enjoy the hobby it pays to know as much as possible of the biology.

No creature has quite the sting in our mythology and folklore as the scorpion. From the dawn of human civilization they have been a dangerous figure in our imaginations—poisonous, precise, and deadly quiet—but as Louise M. Pryke shows in this book, their bad reputation has overshadowed many exceptional qualities. Scurrying across hundreds of millions of years and across every continent except Antarctica, this book gives the scorpion its due as one of nature’s longest lasting survivors. Indeed scorpions are older than dinosaurs. An ancient arthropod, their form—notable for its pair of pincers and an elegant tail that holds a menacing stinger high in the air in a permanent striking position—hasn’t changed since prehistoric times, though today there are some 1700 different species. Throughout our existence scorpions have served as a powerful cultural and religious symbol—sometimes dangerous, sometimes protecting—from the Egyptian goddess Serket to Zodiac astrology to folk medicine. A fascinating tour that takes us from the art of North Africa to the American Civil War to the markets of Beijing, Scorpion is an homage to one of earth’s oldest residents.

This is an important addition to the Professional Breeders Series by weel known breeder and Keeper Russ Gurley. He offers care and breeding information as well as 26 species accounts. The keeping of invertebrates as pets is growing across the planet. Tarantulas and scorpions are at the front of this exciting movement. The keeping and breeding of captive tarantulas and scorpions is truly an art form. The number of captive invertebrates available to hobbyists worldwide is directly related to the breeding programs being established by keepers. Probably more than any other section of the exotic pet market, the invertebrate offspring produced by breeders take pressure off of the wild populations. These wild populations are under extreme pressure from deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction. The need to be able to properly take care of tarantulas and scorpions in captivity is important to their future in the hobby. With this book, author Russ Gurley hopes to inspire new keepers and to share some of his expertise with successfully keeping and breeding the most interesting species of tarantulas and scorpions being kept in captivity. Included are helpful hints for successful husbandry and mating and tips that have helped keepers maintain some of the most exciting invertebrates in captivity.

Scorpions are exotic pets, and keeping them as pets is a relatively unexplored field, but this guide sheds light on the fundamentals of keeping an Asian Forest Scorpion as a pet. Included are feeding, housing, enclosure design, humidity, lighting, scorpion medicine, morphology, temperature, breeding, and more! If you own an Asian Forest Scorpion or are looking to purchase one and want to know how to take care of it, I strongly recommend this guide! Scorpions may not be cuddly, yet they are very fascinating to keep as pets. They hush up, clean, and genuinely low-upkeep. The most widely recognized pet scorpions aren't especially perilous, particularly contrasted with other scorpion species. Their stings are compared to those of a honey bee, however genuine anaphylactic responses can happen in certain individuals.
