I This book, the work of a novice in this line, is the result of much labor and no small expense. It has not been prepared with an idea of pecuniary profit, and no disappointment will be felt if a large part of the edition lies in the attic unsold, and the books pass as heirlooms to my descendants Nor do I regret the labor, or grudge the expense. It has been a labor of love, and I have had my reward as I went on with the work. It is not a general history of the Dean family in the United States. One object of its publication was to aid the future historian who will undertake the preparation of a Dean genealogy, by preserving such records as I have been able to collect my more immediate family. To make the book of greater value to all who possess a copy, I have, by permission, reprinted the valuable article on the descendants of John and Walter Dean, of Taunton, Mass., which appeared in the third volume of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, issued in 1849. This article has long been out of print, and copies are rare and hard to find outside of the large libraries.
