DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Otis family was largely responsible for committing Barnstable to the revolutionary cause, a move that irrevocably undermined the placid, homogenous nature of their society. As he discusses the reactions of the Otises and their community to this crisis, Waters illuminates the causes of the Revolution itself. Originally published in 1968. DOWNLOAD EBOOKJohn Otis (ca. 1581-1657) was born at Glastonbury, Somerset, England, the son of Richard Otis (ca. 1550-1611). He immigrated to America in 1630 or 1631 and settled first at Higham, Massachusetts. He died at Weymouth, Massachusetts. Record chiefly follows line of descent to John Otis (1797-1873). He was born at Leyden, Lewis County, New York, the son of Chandler and Abigail Coe Otis. He married Mary Graham (1801-1878) in 1824. They settled at Denmark, New York, where they had nine children, 1827-1844. They moved to Wilna, New York, in the early 1850s. Descendants listed, especially descendants of their son, John Otis (1827-1901), lived in New York, Illinois, Iowa, and elsewhere.
