DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is an updated version of Karier's highly regarded Man, Society, and Education, which focuses on the concepts of human nature and community throughout American educational history. For the new edition, Karier has added chapters on the major movements in American education from World War II to the present and on the major Supreme Court cases involving educational policy during the same period. "This classic volume remains a remarkable study in the history of ideas into which the implications for American schooling have been deftly woven. It is balanced, thorough, and intelligently challenging." --- Ann M. Keppel, College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa "This new edition should have great use as a primary text at the graduate and advanced undergraduate levels." --- Peter A. Sola, School of Education, Howard University

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis comprehensive and integrative text is designed to introduce teaching as a professional activity that requires a solid grounding in theory and research, responsible judgment, and lifelong professional development. It also provides the student a with a foundation in the social, philosophical, legal, historical, and political aspects of education. The text creates a more practical learning environment than the standard foundations text through a wealth of vivid examples, realistic case studies, and opportunities to practice analyzing and applying implications of theory and research.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBorn during the turbulent years of the 1960s, multicultural education has attempted to help students acquire a more sophisticated understanding of the pluralistic populations of the United States. And as the United States becomes increasingly multicultural, it is necessary for students to learn to live and work effectively with members of different racial and ethnic groups. Each state's experiences with multicultural education vary, and states have emphasized multicultural education to greater and lesser degrees. This reference book is a guide to multicultural education initiatives in the 50 states. After an introductory essay on the development of multicultural education programs, the volume presents alphabetically arranged entries on the status of multicultural education in each state. Because the programs in each state have developed in response to the particular characteristics and experiences of the state's population, each entry begins with a brief history that places special emphasis on the state's cultural groups. The second section discusses the state's educational system, since the system provides a framework for the state's multicultural education initiatives. The third section analyzes the state's creation and implementation of multicultural education policies and programs and draws on responses to a questionnaire. Each entry closes with bibliographic references, and the volume concludes with a selected, general bibliography.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis mathematical study was initially written as a set of notes in complex analysis over the spring and summer of 2013. Its purpose is to clarify the techniques and results of complex analysis by using a dialogue between master and student. Its inspiration is the belief that this form of open conversation can show the reader both the tension and structure of the material. For this reason, dialogue can prove to be a very powerful and eloquent form of mathematical instruction. The book begins with an introduction to sequences and topology before tackling the topics of complex differentiability, Taylor series, contour integration, and the calculus of residues. After all this, complex functions are studied as conformal mappings, leading naturally to the Riemann mapping theorem. Before going on to the proof of this theorem, the focus shifts to the study of heat and Fourier analysis. The techniques of complex analysis are used to aid in studying the Fourier series and transform. The study then returns to conformal mappings in the context of solving Laplace's equation on various regions. After this, the topic becomes the study of special functions, culminating in Riemann's proof of the prime number theorem, and then shifting focus once again to the doubly-periodic elliptic functions. The final chapter is not standard in an introductory complex analysis book, and concerns the study of Theta functions and modular forms. There is a separate appendix of color plots to accompany this book. This work was mostly modeled after Elias Stein's lecture series at Princeton.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBuilding on the success of the popular first edition, the author tackles the latest issues and practices in the field of classroom assessment. The No Child Left Behind Act has transformed the role of educational assessment, requiring annual assessments as part of a federal system of educational accountability. National accreditation organizations such NCATE have mandated standards-based performance and emphasized specific assessment benchmarks in meeting these standards. The inclusion movement to accommodate special-needs students in the regular education classroom also has impacted classroom assessment practices. Teacher assessment, classroom environment, test anxiety, the Race to the Top grants, and many more timely topics receive comprehensive yet accessible treatment. Banks provides thorough and well-documented discussions of performance assessment, essay and multiple-choice assessments, formative assessment, and reliability/validity issues as well as invaluable classroom assessment tools that include portfolios, rubrics, journals, and models such as Anderson and Krathwohls revision of Blooms Taxonomy. Gender and diversity issues, including learning differences and socioeconomic influences on student achievement, are given in-depth coverage. Outstanding features include case studies, point/counterpoint debates on controversial assessment topics and practices, teacher application exercises, thought-provoking self-assessment exercises, and end-of-chapter activities that include review questions and opportunities for directed learning.
