Excerpt from A Descriptive Account of the Second Royal Gala Festival, at Stratford-Upon-Avon, in the Commemoration of the Natal Day of Shakspeare, the King's Adopted Birthday, and the Festival of St. George, on the 23rd, 24th, 26th of April, 1830 Some such feeling as that which excited the labours of those learned men, we trust actuated the celebrated Garrick to institute the Jubilee of 1769. We are aware, however, that other motives, far less honourable, have been attributed to him. Whatever they might he (says the learned His torian of Stratford, )1' the design was certainly noble in itself, and in spite of all the ridicule and Opposition, which envy or malice exerted, it was carried into execution; the perform ance was received with universal approbation; and it was allowed, by gentlemen of the first rank in the literary world, that no occasion of festivity ever was or ever could be more justifiable, than that of paying honours to the memory of so great an ornament to his country, as the inimitable shakspeare. Focusing on England, Hungary and on some other European countries, the book explores the latent religious patterns in the appropriation of Shakespeare from the 1769 Stratford Jubilee to the tercentenary of Shakespeare's birth in 1864. It shows how the Shakespeare cult used quasi-religious (verbal and ritual) means of reverence, how it made use of some romantic notions, and how the ensuing quasi-transcendental authority was utilized for political purposes. The book suggests a theoretical framework and a comprehensive anthropological context for the interpretation of literature.
