In typical A Criminal Love fashion, Kayman and Lane are still doing their thing. The two have settled into their life together, and after the birth of their daughter, Kennedy, things finally feel complete. Wanting to branch off on her own and get back to her roots, Lane starts her own photography business, which is the perfect way for her to spread her wings, while keeping her daughter close. With Kayman, it's business as usual. Although he, Karter, King, Royal, and Shine are slowly transitioning themselves to do less, when duty calls, Kayman has to answer. What the two don't expect is all of the twists and turns that life is about to throw at them. Kayman and Karter's father has created a problem for the whole family, that could cause Karter to have to take his own father's life or possibly lose his own. Not to mention, their mother and sister might be at risk as well. Add in the fact that Kay's business connections put Lane in a delicate situation, and Kayman has his hands full trying to balance life at home and in the streets. The gang's still going strong, but Lane and Kay have to stick together and depend on each other in order to survive everything that's forcing its way into their world. Through it all, Lane realizes that loving a street king isn't always easy.

This third issue of Down & Out: The Magazine features a new Jim Brodie story by Barry Lancet, whose novel Japantown has been optioned by J.J. Abrams and Warner Brothers for the Hollywood treatment. Here we have Brodie on a trip to his home in Japan and a quest to find out what’s going on with the yakuza and a perplexing kidnapping. But first up is a story by Canadian favorite Peter Sellers; he delivers a nasty little crime story of love and loyalty in the workplace in his own unique style. Patti Abbott gives us a searing story proving once again how nothing torches the human soul like that of another person’s expectations. Art Taylor, one of the best and most prolific short story artists working today, makes his first appearance here with a relatively short tale reminiscent of the late great Richard Matheson. Speaking of legends, Robert J. Randisi shares a story from his “Rat Pack” series. Next a writer who makes words look as though they fit together far more easily than they actually do is S.A. Solomon with her tale of corporate Big Business and other vices. Writing partners Frank Zafiro and Jim Wilsky debut separate stories from their Ania series, actual prequels to the novels, the first of which, Blood on Blood, will be released in April by Down & Out Books. A fine noir tale by prolific author Michael Bracken helps round us out. As usual we have another fantastic column by J. Kingston Pierce on the novels of the late Stanley Ellin, and for our “A Few Cents a Word” feature we present a discussion and a story by one of the hard-boiled school’s originators, Raoul Whitfield.

This collection examines law and justice on television in different countries around the world. It provides a benchmark for further study of the nature and extent of television coverage of justice in fictional, reality and documentary forms. It does this by drawing on empirical work from a range of scholars in different jurisdictions. Each chapter looks at the raw data of how much "justice" material viewers were able to access in the multi-channel world of 2014 looking at three phases: apprehension (police), adjudication (lawyers), and disposition (prison/punishment). All of the authors indicate how television developed in their countries. Some have extensive public service channels mixed with private media channels. Financing ranges from advertising to programme sponsorship to licensing arrangements. A few countries have mixtures of these. Each author also examines how "TV justice" has developed in their own particular jurisdiction. Readers will find interesting variations and thought-provoking similarities. There are a lot of television shows focussed on legal themes that are imported around the world. The authors analyse these as well. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in law, popular culture, TV, or justice and provides an important addition to the literature due to its grounding in empirical data.
