Excerpt from A Course of Practical Chemistry for Agricultural Students, Vol. 1 The following exercises in Practical Agricultural Chemistry are designed primarily for the use of students taking the course for the Degree in Agricultural Science at Cambridge University. Volume I is intended to cover the first year's course on the Chemistry and Physics of the Soil, while Volume II covers the second year's course on the Chemistry of Foods. The latter volume is divided into two parts: Part I dealing with such exercises in Pure Organic Chemistry as are essential for agricultural students, and is entirely qualitative, while Part II deals with quantitative estimations and technical analyses of food stuffs. This division has been considered desirable, as students who have already taken a course in Organic Chemistry will find it unnecessary to work through Part I of Volume II. Volume III deals with the special advanced Chemistry of Insecticides and Fungicides, Food preservatives, etc. It is hoped that this division into convenient booklets will make them useful to teachers. The exercises are designed to illustrate most of the essential points in Agricultural Chemistry and to require the minimum of apparatus. A Course of Practical Work was compiled by Professor T. B. Wood some years ago for the use of his classes, and this forms the foundation of a portion of the present exercises. The Sincere thanks of the authors are due to Professor Wood and the Syndics of the University Press for their permission to utilise that material. Excerpt from An Experimental Course of Chemistry for Agricultural Students A farmer does not need to be a chemist; at the same time he needs the training in accuracy, careful observation, and experimental method which a study of chemistry, properly carried out, imparts, and he needs a knowledge of the ele mentary principles of chemical change and of the properties of certain chemical substances, both inorganic and organic. The customary four years' course of inorganic and organic chemistry goes far beyond the requirements of an agricultural student, and is usually beyond the time at his disposal. The following course is designed to enable an agricultural student to acquire the knowledge and training he needs by a short experimental study of the chemical substances with which agriculture is concerned, his attention being directed at the same time to the practical application of each subject dealt with to rural industry. The course upon which the work is founded has been in use during the past three years in some of the grammar schools and evening continuation schools in the rural districts of Essex, and has also been used in the County Technical Laboratories at Chelmsford by the students of the agricultural classes, and as a preparatory course for elementary school teachers who wish to qualify themselves to teach chemistry in the agricultural parts of the county. Excerpt from A Foundation Course in Chemistry for Students of Agriculture and Technology In the present volume the authors have attempted to emphasise those aspects of the subject which are of special importance to such students, while others have been treated in sufficient detail to enable the general principles to be securely grasped. In order to avoid the mischievous tabula tion of disconnected facts, matters of purely technical interest have been as far as possible omitted from the text; but numerous footnotes have been added, pointing out the application of the general principles to commercial and industrial processes. These notes should add to the interest of the work and, to a certain extent, give point to the students' reading. Excerpt from General Chemistry, Vol. 1: Principles and Applications This book has been written to meet the demand for a Simple and practical treatment of the principles and applications of Chemistry. The author realizes that demands are now being made of teachers of Chemistry which would hardly have been considered several years ago. Not only must the student be taught the principles of chemistry and their applications in daily life, but he must be taught in such a way that, Should occasion arise, he can use chemistry in earning a living. The plea SO long made that chemistry is practical and useful is now being tested. Consequently the author has kept one thought in mind during the preparation of this book, viz.: principles and applications must go hand in hand. Principles are the foundation upon which applications rest. To teach either one exclusively is hazardous, for when separated one is as barren as the other is superficial. The author has aimed to include in this book not only the principles of Chemistry universally regarded as an essential part of a well-rounded course, but also numerous practical applications. First, the text includes a clear, Simple treatment of the facts, laws, theories, and principles that serve as the foundation of chemistry. This material is written in a style which assumes that the book is to be read, studied, and used by beginners. Special efiort has been made to present very clearly such needful topics as atomic weights, equations, and valence. All of this material is made more serviceable by a liberal selection of original exercises and problems containing many novel and attractive features. Teachers will find in these exercises and problems abundant material to drive home principles and arouse interest in the vocational aspects of chemistry. Excerpt from Vocational Chemistry for Students of Agriculture and Home Economics The style of presentation has, of course, been made as simple as possible. Many of the laws and subjects that are conventionally presented in texts on general chemistry are omitted; among these are ionization, dissociation, the gas laws, and the laws of multiple and reciprocal propor tions. The writer has found' that these topics are not essential to an understanding of the chemistry which is needed by these students. The text is designed for a full year's course, including classroom and laboratory work. Where facilities are not available for the students to perform the laboratory work, this can be done by the instructor as demonstration. If only one term is given to chemistry, the text alone can be followed, with a limited amount of demonstration work. In this case the last two or three chapters may have to be omitted, which can be done without impairing the unity of the course. Realizing that no doubt many sins both of commission and omission are present, the writer will welcome any sug gestions for'the improvement of this volume. Excerpt from The First Book of Lessons in Chemistry, in Its Application to Agriculture: For the Use of Farmers and Teachers The science of Chemistry has been cultivated from the most remote times, yet its history for centuries might be comprised in a few pages. At one time the slave of seekers for gold, and of dreamers after an elixir which might render man proof against the shafts of death, its language was rendered purposely obscure, so as to be unintelligible to the bulk of the people. In later times again we find it but the servant of the physician, useful in compounding the drugs which he employed, and exhibiting in its menial garb little of that important character which it has since assumed, and which leads us now to regard it as the surest interpreter of nature, and one of the most powerful instruments in advancing the civilization of the world. With the advance of scientific knowledge which has distinguished the present time, the means for diffusing it over the world have also everywhere increased. The railway, itself a noble monument of what the science of the present age has accomplished, has become one of the great instruments of extending the influence of her discoveries, and is destined to accomplish far greater things than the famous highways along which the arts and civilization of ancient Rome were carried, and will yet be the means of giving light and knowledge to the remotest corners of the land. All professions have not been equally advanced by the application of scientific knowledge. Whilst some by availing themselves of its assistance have been brought to the greatest perfection, others have for years remained stationary, or have only lately received any impulse towards improvement. Among the occupations of men upon which science until very lately cast but a feeble and uncertain light, we must place the cultivation of the soil. It would occupy too much time to investigate all the causes of this strange state of things; it is, however, well known that the art of agriculture, the most ancient as it is the most important of human occupa tions, for centuries remained almost stationary and seemingly unaffected by the onward march of society. Excerpt from Practical Chemistry: Part I. Elementary In all the experiments I have endeavoured to pay heed to the exigencies of teaching practical chemistry to classes of students, and to students who have not very much time to devote to the study. The book ought to be used in connection with Lectures and Demonstrations. The first section follows pretty closely the order in which I have attempted, for some years, to develop the subject-matter of elementary chemistry in my own lectures. All the experiments described in this Part have been tried repeatedly in the laboratory. By the kindness of the Publishers I have been allowed to use the proof-sheets in the laboratory before making the final corrections. I can, therefore, affirm that the experiments are workable. Excerpt from The Elements of Chemistry: As Applied to Agriculture The importance of placing before the youth in our schools, as well as in the hands of our farmers at their homes, the means of acquiring a knowledge of the elements of the science and art of agriculture, has long been acknowledged by teachers and others. Such means have already been available to those who had acquired a limited knowledge of chemistry; but the most valuable works, containing the facts most useful to the practical farmer, have been too voluminous and expensive for his own use and means, or too technical for the use of his sons while in the common schools.
