Excerpt from A Contents-Subject Index to General and Periodical Literature Owing to the vast increase in the literary output of recent years. Considerable anxiety has been felt by librarians and others as to the possibility of keeping pace with such conditions, both in the additions to their stock of books and in the provision of adequate catalogues and other guides for the use of their readers. In the course of the discussion and controversy arising on these matters considerable attention has been directed to the question of Subject Indexes, and many valuable suggestions have been made, although as yet little has been effected with general literature, beyond giving the author and subject entries of the books. The Subject Index may be divided into two classes - the one referring to the main subject of a book or work, which is generally set forth upon its title-page the other to the contents of a work which are not apparent from its title and are rarely noted in an ordinary catalogue. Taken singly or individually it will be found that almost every work published in these days. Exclusive perhaps of prose fiction, gives not only a clear announce ment of its main subject on the title-page, but also a description of its contents, often carefully arranged under subject headings, either in a list of contents or an index. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from An Index to Periodical Literature This volume will be found to contain my former Index, and more than six times as much matter in addition. The list of periodicals has been largely increased; portions of series before excluded, for the reason that their Indexes had been previously published, have now been included; and the whole has been brought down to January, 1852. Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: From January 1, 1892 to December 31, 1896 Among the periodicals now first indexed are the Christian Union (now Outlook) and the Independent. The contents of these papers have not been thoroughly indexed, references being made only to symposiums, or to unusually extended and important single articles. The Book Buyer, Book News, and Book Reviews are indexed only by references to their important articles, largely notices of authors with portraits. The entire set of the Magazine of Art (cassell's) is here indexed, and its great store of valuable material on all art subjects thus becomes available. Somewhat over two-thirds of the matter contained in this Supplement has appeared from year to year under the same editorship and collaboration, as one of the features of the Annual Literary Index, issued from the Office Of the Library Journal, in New York. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1911: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index The plan of the magazine subject-index remains the same this year as in the previous volumes. Briefly, it is to furnish a subject-index to the contents of the periodicals most needed by libraries, but which are not indexed in any other general index. Thus, as from its first issue, this index opens to the student an entirely new field of research. Fiction is omitted, except novels, and stories by prominent writers, which are entered under name of author.
