DOWNLOAD EBOOKTo develop a vocation we ask: what do I want to be remembered for? It involves aspiring to personal integrity and a life well lived. Those of us working in the financial sector fulfill our vocations by finding ways to serve its social purposes, which is to allocate resources efficiently and to provide financial security--not forgetting the needy. This means contributing to institutions, where people can flourish personally, and creating appropriate products and services. The ethics of those working on finding their vocation do not flow from rules and obligations, but from a personal commitment to seeking the really good life. This life is based on the fundamental personal virtue, which is integrity. It is concerned with building well, tying our thinking to our words and actions, our work to our motivations and to intrinsic rewards, and means to ends everywhere. The book is written for those who aspire to the cultivation of the virtues of wisdom, self-control and courage--to develop ourselves and protect ourselves from the intrusion of others--and justice, which is the social virtue that underlies flourishing communities based on mutual respect. We need communal structures and regulations to help us, but these are better if they are less rule orientated, are forgiving, and aimed at bringing out the best in people. The current flaws in the financial system of overcharging, over-servicing, and recklessness are unjust, but can and are being addressed by those who rise to the challenge of finding their virtuous vocations.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this book the authors consider the natural environment as an integrated system. The physical, chemical and biological processes that govern the behaviour of the environmental system can thus be understood through mathematical modelling, and their evolution can be studied by means of numerical simulation. The book contains a summary of various efficient approaches in atmospheric prediction, such as numerical weather prediction and statistical forecast of climate change, as well as other successful methods in land surface modelling. The authors explore new theories and methods in environment prediction such as systems analysis and information theory. Attention is given to new achievements in remote sensing tele-metering and geographic information systems.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe phenomenon of fire in the Australian landscape traverses many interests and disciplines. At a national level, there is an urgent need for the integration of both the natural and social sciences in the formulation of public policy. With contributions from 30 leading experts, Australia Burning draws together these issues, under the themes: *Ecology and the environment *Fire behaviour and fire regime science *People and property *Policy, institutional arrangements and the legal framework *Indigenous land and fire management The book examines some of the key questions that relate to the ecology, prediction and management of fire, urban planning, law, insurance, and community issues, including indigenous and non-indigenous concerns. It looks at what we need to know to inform public policy, given the present risks and uncertainty, and explores the avenues for closer integration between science, policy and the community.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume presents a flexible conceptual framework for comprehending institutional dimensions of sustainability, emphasising the complexity of instututional systems, and highlighting the interdependence between policy learning and institutional change. This framework is applied and developed through the analysis of five significant arenas of institutional and policy change: environmental policy in the EU; New Zealand's Councils for Sustainable Development Act; and transformative property rights instruments. From these explorations, key principles for insitutional change are identified, including the institutional change; reiteration and learning; integration in policy and practice; subsidarity; and legal change.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAustralian cities have traditionally relied for their water on a 'predict-and-provide' philosophy that gives primacy to big engineering solutions. In more recent years privatised water authorities, seeking to maximise consumption and profits, have reinforced the emphasis on increasing supply. Now the cities must cope with the stresses these policies have imposed on the eco-systems from which they harvest water, into which they discharge wastes, and on which they are located. Residents are having to pay more for their water, while the cities themselves are becoming less sustainable. Must we build more dams and desalination plants, or should we be managing the demand for urban water more prudently? This book explores the demand for urban water and how it has changed in response to shifting social mores over the past century. It explains how demand for centralised provision of water might be reshaped to enable the cities to better cope with expected changes in supply as our climate changes. And it discusses the implications of property rights in water for proposals to privatise water services.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAustralia's long-unresolved forest conflict has been the make-or-break factor in federal elections for the last few decades, with both parties often arguing that the four-decade-old forest conflict has no practical solution. needs and replace all native forest woodchipping. Australia can have a large, highly competitive and prosperous forest industry without logging native forests. Since irreconciliable development versus environment interests cannot explain Australia's ongoing forest conflict, what does? economically superior products displace environmentally inferior products in the market. Behind this failure lies silenced plantation processors, failing bureaucracies, government-created extraordinary native-forest-woodchipping profits and destructive union behaviour. Judy Clark documents and examines each in detail, and proposes a new forest policy for Australia, calling on individuals in the power sector - business people and politicians - to commit themselves to breaking down the obstructions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDovers and Hussey argue that better public policy is the key to creating a more sustainable environment and show what this might involve. This is an intensely practical book, intellectually rigorous, and written in a concise and accessible style. They meld a deep knowledge of traditional public policy with a close understanding of sustainability problems and an appreciation of the complex institutional systems which make up modern civil society. As well as establishing an operational framework for policy analysis and prescription, they provide ways of fulfilling key elements of an effective policy process with chapters on: Problem framing Policy framing Policy implementation Policy monitoring and evaluation Public participation Institutional settings and reform for effective policy. This edition responds to the increasing urgency and complexity of challenges of environment and sustainability. It is updated to include new perspectives from policy theory and practice, expands the coverage of international dimensions of trade and regulation and incorporates coverage of emerging issues and policy challenges such as climate mitigation and adaptation, urban sustainability, and the nexus between climate change, energy and water.
