Excerpt from A Compendious German Grammar A. Careful distinction of the contents of the book by variety of type, according to their degree of immediate importance, has been attempted throughout. Especially, I have meant to put into the largest type (sm. Pica) just about so much as the scholar ought to learn carefully and thoroughly in his first course of grammar-lessons, preparatory to reading. This a class should acquire, according to the age and capacity and previous training of its members, in from twelve to twenty-five lessons; and should then at once be put into reading, while the grammar is taken up again, and such part of what was before omitted is learned as the judgment of the intelligent teacher shall direct. It is solely as auxiliary to the first course of lessons that the Exercises are intended - to furnish, namely, to the teacher the opportunity of drilling his pupils in the practical application of the more important rules and principles while they are learning them, or gaining practice in parsing, subject by sub ject, instead of leaving the whole work to be taken up at once when reading is begun. While believing that they will be found valuable in this way, I would not press their use, but would leave it to each one's decision whether to employ or neglect them. Nothing has been put in the largest type after the subject of conjugation is finished, nor anything anywhere in syntax: the main principles of construction, and the use of particles, are sufficiently alike in English and German to allow the pupil to begin reading without having studied them especially in German. Excerpt from A Brief German Grammar: With References to His Larger Grammar His work has been prepared at the instance of many teachers, and because there appeared to be a call for a German grammar which should present the most important facts 'of the language in the briefest form consistent with accuracy and clearness of statement. It follows, as a matter of course, the same general method, and uses the same term inology, as the author's larger work (a Compendious German Grammar, etc., H. Holt (it which has been approved by wide use now during more than fifteen years; and it may be used as an introduction to the other. In order to facilitate the transition, and for the convenience of those who, while using it, desire to refer to the fuller statements and explana tions of the larger grammar, the numbers of the latter's para graphs corresponding to those of this volume are added in parenthesis to its own paragraph-numbers. The exercises may be used according to the discretion of the teacher and the special needs and capacities of his class and, where immediate advance to reading is desired, the english-into-german exer cises may in many cases be well omitted until the grammar comes to be gone over a second time. The selected sentences at the end are intended to form the ground for such further grammatical drill as shall be found desirable. L. Meissner, of Queen's College, Belfast which has attained great popularity in the United Kingdom. In the present book the material thus furnished has been freely used and, where occasion seemed to require, freely modified. The changed title will, to a great extent, explain the scope of such modifications. The term Public School Grammar would seem to restrict the original design to purely elementary work. In this book the attempt has been made to carry forward the same method so as to include also college and university study - in a word, to meet the wants of students of every grade up to the point where the demand arises for the higher study of historical and scientific gram mar.
