Excerpt from History of the Holy Eucharist in Great Britain, Vol. 2 It is evident then that, whichever of these views is embraced, a history of this rite, even a partial history, professedly restricted to one country, ought to be full of interest and instruction. If the Protestant view be correct, then it will be a history of idolatry in worship and consequent corruption in morals. If, on the other hand, the Catholic View be the true one, it will be the history of god's fidelity to His promises, His watchful providence over His Church, His gra cions dealings with men, and we shall have many a fair page to unroll of the mutual love of the Creator and of His creatures, though those pages may be defaced with some foul blots of man's ingratitude. Excerpt from A Short History of the Catholic Church in England When our Saviour sent forth His Apostles to preach the Gospel_ Britain had already come under the power of the Roman Emperors. In the designs of God's providence this vast empire was destined to aid in spreading far and wide the Christian faith. And so it came to pass that this distant island and Jerusalem, where by Christ's death on the cross the redemption of the world was accomplished, then formed parts of a worldwide organised system of government whose centre was at Rome. Excerpt from England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth I am indebted for a few documents which throw light on the doings of English pirates in the Mediterranean (appendix Papers in the Vatican suggested the idea of making researches in this little used collection. Among English archives, the most important are those belonging to the catholic cathedral of Westminster. No others can compare with them in value for the inner history of English catholicism. As their contents, however, are of importance only from the end of the sixteenth century, the letters, reports, and memorials of English catholics and Roman officials which they contain, are only of service for the last chapter of this volume. The rich treasures of the Public Record Office have been already largely made public in the Calendars of State Papers. However, for some series (especially Italian Sizzler), I have been able to draw upon fresh sources of information. As regards the results yielded by the Recusant Rolls, I must refer to Ch. I., 4. The British Museum and the Bodleian Library were invaluable to me on account of their original editions of royal proclamations, and, above all, for their rich store of pamphlets and broadsides. For although it was only in the seventeenth century that the classical period of political pamphleteering dawned for England, still as early as the time of Elizabeth, broadsides and pamphlets had become such a power in public life that no student of history can pass over these sources of information with impunity. This is perhaps more true for the history of English catholicism than for any other department (cf. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Short History of the Catholic Church in England Episcopal Registers Of Exeter, edited by Prebendary hingeston-randolph, and a variety of papers printed in the transactions of different County Archaeological Societies have brought together such a mass of valu able material for the History of England, that it becomes a matter of considerable difficulty to one who wishes to write a short History to select the particular materials that will be most useful, since it is impossible for him to master all. Excerpt from The History of Religion in England The Religion of England - Ever since the English were a nation, their religion has been. That of the Catholic Church of Christ. From the time that the Angles, Saxons, and J utes became Christians to the Reformation, from the sixth to the sixteenth century, all religious people in England were members of the Church. Since the Reformation other religious bodies have sprung into existence, some of them differing slightly, some very materially, from the Church; have attracted to themselves numbers of earnest and devout people; and have exercised a cor responding influence, from time to time, upon the government and policy of England. Still the majority of Englishmen have always remained members of the Church, and consequently the History of Religion in England is mainly the History of the Church of England. Excerpt from Our Latest Invasion: An Account of the Influx of Roman Catholic Orders Into Great Britain Of a republic, and because they have interfered more and more with commercial matters and spread ideas contrary to the Republic. There has also been a certain amount of jealousy generated by the steady, quiet growth in numbers and wealth of the religious Orders; and it became a popular political cry to propose that stern measures should be meted out to them.
