TRB Special Report 215: Measuring Airport Landside Capacity reviews existing capacity assessment techniques and recommend guidelines that can be used by airport operators, planners, and others who must measure airport landside capacity. Congestion at airport terminal buildings, access roads, and parking areas increasingly threatens the capability of airports to serve additional passengers and air cargo. Measuring the capacity of these airport landside facilities and services is becoming critical. No generally accepted standards exist for gauging the level of service provided by landside facilities and their operations. This report concludes that current knowledge about the performance of various airport landside components is inadequate to support airport landside service standards at this time. Instead, the report recommends a process for measuring airport landside capacity that takes an important first step toward developing such standards.

TRB's Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Report 40: Airport Curbside and Terminal Area Roadway Operations includes guidance on a cohesive approach to analyzing traffic operations on airport curbside and terminal area roadways. The report examines operational performance measures for airport curbside and terminal area roadway operations and reviews methods of estimating those performance measures. The report includes a quick analysis tool for curbside operations and low-speed roadway weaving area, highlights techniques for estimating traffic volumes, and presents common ways of addressing operational problems. Appendix A, Glossary, to ACRP Report 40 is included in the printed report. Appendices B through G, are available online.

Modelling and Managing Airport Performance provides an integrated view of state-of-the-art research on measuring and improving the performance of airport systems with consideration of both airside and landside operations. The considered facets of performance include capacity, delays, economic costs, noise, emissions and safety. Several of the contributions also examine policies for managing congestion and allocating sparse capacity, as well as for mitigating the externalities of noise, emissions, and safety/risk. Key features: Provides a global perspective with contributing authors from Europe, North and South America with backgrounds in academia, research institutions, government, and industry Contributes to the definition, interpretation, and shared understanding of airport performance measures and related concepts Considers a broad range of measures that quantify operational and environmental performance, as well as safety and risk Discusses concepts and strategies for dealing with the management of airport performance Presents state-of-the-art modelling capabilities and identifies future modelling needs Themed around 3 sections – Modelling Airport Performance, Assessing Airport Impacts, and Managing Airport Performance and Congestion Modelling and Managing Airport Performance is a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the global air transportation community.
