Excerpt from A Bibliographical Essay on Governor Hutchinson's Historical Publications Rev. Samuel Mather, son of Cotton Mather; he mar ried Hannah Hutchinson, a sitter Of the Governor. Some idea Of the extent and value of the materials used by Hutchinson in pre paring his first volume, may be formed by referring to the Appendix to that book, and also by consulting the volume Of Orig inal Papers, afterwards published by him. It is a little singular that he did not con sult or make use Of Governor Winthrop's History, while writing his work. Nearly ten years before its publication, Prince had announced, on the cover Of the first part Of the second volume of his Annals, that he had lately received this most anthem tic and valuable journal Of Gov. Win thtop so that Hutchinson could not have been ignorant Of its existence. He, how ever, had the benefit Of this History at second hand, through Hubbard. Excerpt from Life and Writings of Governor Charles Henry Hardin This book is prepared from a sense of duty and love for its subject. Charles H. Hardin. His long, successful and useful life on earth is ended; his birth into the eternal life begun. We cannot penetrate beyond the veil that hides him from our View, but on the inner Spirit shines a light from heaven, revealing the glories of that bright realm where now he has his home. This light comes to us in the words of our blessed Savior, Because I live, ye shall live also His words, then, which are Spirit and life, assure us that our dear departed one is not dead, but alive with Him. But there remains a duty for us to discharge, to perpetuate his memory; to chronicle some Of the events of his long, laborious life. Many friends request a memorial to be prepared, and it is right to record in a book, a life spent in the service of his country. Thomas Carlyle thus speaks: The articulate, audible voice of the Past, when the body and material substance of it has altogether vanished like a dream, lies as in magic preserva tion, in the pages of books.
