"The Oxford Handbook of Community Singing shows in abundant detail that singing with others is thriving. Using an array of interdisciplinary methods, chapter authors prioritize participation rather than performance and provide finely grained accounts of group singing in community, music therapy, religious, and music education settings. Themes associated with protest, incarceration, nation, hymnody, group bonding, identity, and inclusivity infuse the 47 chapters. Written almost wholly during the 2020-21 COVID-19 pandemic, the Handbook features a section dedicated to collective singing facilitated by audiovisual or communications media (mediated singing), some of it quarantine-mandated. The last of eight substantial sections is a repository of new theories about how group singing practices work. Throughout, the authors problematize the limitations inherited from the western European choral music tradition and report on workable new remedies to counter those constraints"--

There was a great deal of sing ing during the War, and With peace came a temporary reaction from what had been, in the public mind, a purely war -time activity. That reaction subsided and Community Singing has been resumed With fresh interest and vigor. Among other beneficial results of this practice is the marked growth of music appreciation apparent in every place where community singing has taken root, which has created an unmistakable demand for greater scope in material to meet the improved abilities of the singers. No. 2 Twice 55 Community Song-s, Tko Green Book, aims to meet this demand; to serve as a bridge from the now familiar and popular com munity sing to the choral society. To an extent never equalled in a col lection intended for wide popular use, it includes material that 15 worthy of the best choral societies: arias and choruses from famous operas, four-part songs by favorite composers, together With selections from the best-known of the great oratorios. But While extending the scope in the direction of more important cho ral work, the less ambitious functions of community singing have not been overlooked. The book contains simple folk-songs of many nations; an abun dance of songs of American origin, including spirituals, Indian songs, and songs of patriotism and home; many songs of occasion, Thanksgiving, Eas ter, and especially of Christmas; songs that express the greetings of good fellowship, the lilt of humor and the tenderness of sentiment. During the 1920s, a visit to the movie theater almost always included a sing-along. Patrons joined together to render old favorites and recent hits, usually accompanied by the strains of a mighty Wurlitzer organ. The organist was responsible for choosing the repertoire and presentation style that would appeal to his or her patrons, so each theater offered a unique experience. When sound technology drove both musicians and participatory culture out of the theater in the early 1930s, the practice faded and was eventually forgotten. Despite the popularity and ubiquity of community singing—it was practiced in every state, in theaters large and small—there has been scant research on the topic. This volume is the first dedicated account of community singing in the picture palace and includes nearly one hundred images, such as photographs of the movie houses’ opulent interiors, reproductions of sing-along slides, and stills from the original Screen Songs “follow the bouncing ball” cartoons. Esther M. Morgan-Ellis brings the era of movie palaces to life. She presents the origins of theater sing-alongs in the prewar community singing movement, describes the basic components of a sing-along, explores the unique presentation styles of several organists, and assesses the aftermath of sound technology, including the sing-along films and children’s matinees of the 1930s.

Verse captures and portrays sentiment. Revolution, on the other hand, is invariably a culmination of emotions: the tension and strife, hate and faith, and despair and hope of the people who make and are made by them. For those who look back on it, verse can, therefore, serve as a chronicle of historical events and as a priceless look into the socio-political zeitgeist of an era. For those who sing it, verse may have the power to not only fan and fuel existing fiery whirlwinds but to actually ignite flames. Tracing the most controversial, celebrated and lasting of historys musical treasures through four great revolutionsthe American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Russian and Bolshevik revolutions, and the Indian Independence Movementthis book explores the stories these compositions have to tell as well as the lives of the poets, lyricists, songwriters, and singers who wrote them. Whether you are a music aficionado, a history buff or the everyday intellectual, learning from history and art about the human condition in a political and cultural framework is more important today, than ever before. Come, listen.
