He was the son of Bradford Duncan Smith and Nancy Jacobs. Robert married Louisiana Wiggins 21 January 1850. Louisiana died 22 September 1877 and Robert married Priscilla Montgomery. Robert lived in Kentucky and became the father of six sons and eight daughters. Descendants lived in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and elsewhere.
