Zoonoses are caused by microorganisms of animal origin that can also infect humans. Apart from human-to-human transmitted pathogens, they are the microorganisms of greatest concern in regard to threats to drinking-water and ambient water safety, now and in the future. A significant number of emerging and re-emerging waterborne zoonotic pathogens have been recognized over recent decades. SARS, E. coli O157:H7, and Cryptosporidium provide examples of zoonoses with waterborne routes of transmission. Developed from an expert workshop of 29 scientists convened by the World Health Organization and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Waterborne Zoonoses: Identification, Causes and Control provides a critical assessment of current knowledge about waterborne zoonoses and identifies strategies and research needs for controlling future emerging waterborne zoonoses. This book provides guidance to agriculturists, veterinarians, worldwide health agencies and water providers to anticipate potential future waterborne disease problems and to determine whether current practices will be protective or whether new approaches need to be deployed to better protect the health of both humans and animals. The quality and quantity of papers given at successive Health-related Water Microbiology Symposia continues to increase and the millennium meeting in Paris saw the highest ever number of delegates and presentations. Of necessity, these selected proceedings can only give a taste of the overall content of the Symposium but nevertheless, reflect on the growing interest and awareness of the importance of the microbial contamination of our environment and the implications for human health. Numerous contributions address different aspects of one of the waterborne diseases of most concern, cryptosporidiosis. However, this did not preclude reports on outbreaks of other diseases. Several contributions raised important questions: how should epidemiological data be interpreted? and what methods are valid for regulatory monitoring? were of particular interest. Newly developed analytical methods have allowed a greater range of pathogens to be detected. However, such techniques have little significance if they cannot be used for the practical evaluation of water quality and part of this is the acquiring of monitoring data upon which future treatment and policy decisions can be made. The 43 papers selected here cover: standards and quality assurance; risk assessment; epidemiology and disease outbreaks; monitoring; microbial survival; disinfection; wastewater treatment; methodology; and microbial toxins.

Riverbank filtration is widely used in Europe and to some extent in the United States for the public water supply. It is a cost-effective and realisable treatment technology in which horizontal and vertical wells pump a mixture of ground water and induced surface water from a river. This book describes the biogeochemical issues involved in contaminant removal from surface water and the mechanisms of pathogen removal. Specifically, the following three points are considered: *The role of hydrogeological and well construction factors in the development of redox zones at bank filtration sites and the resulting impacts on contaminant removal. *The mechanisms of pathogen removal, including the processes, colloid filtration, die-away, decay, and predation. *The status of riverbank filtration processes in NATO partner countries.

The quality of water, whether it is used for drinking, irrigation or recreational purposes, is significant for health in both developing and developed countries worldwide. This book is based on a programme of work undertaken by an international group of experts during 1999-2001. The aim was to develop a harmonised framework of effective and affordable guidelines and standards to improve the risk assessment and management of water-related microbial hazards. This book will be useful to all those concerned with issues relating to microbial water quality and health, including environmental and public health scientists, water scientists, policy makers and those responsible for developing standards and regulations.
