The friend whose mortal part we lay tenderly and tearfully in its peaceful resting-place, and whose immortal living self passes to a larger, grander life as we bid him farewell, was a common friend to us all. Strangers to one another, it may be; having our homes in many different places and our work in many different lines; some of us coming into this time of sorrow from the joy of an almost daily communion in thought and hope, and others recalling to our remembrance the delightful association of earlier or later years, we turn our footsteps lovingly to this consecrated house and find ourselves united in a bond of sympathy as we enter within its doors. The spirit of the dead, yet living, friend seems to rest upon us all. We look upon his face and say: What a large-minded, large-hearted, generous, noble man he was. He who is called upon to give these lectures cannot but remember that they are given every year, and that he has had very able and faithful predecessors. There are certainly, therefore, some things which he may venture to omit without being supposed to be either ignorant or careless of them. There are certain first principles, of primary importance, which he may take for granted in all that he says. They are so funda mental, that they must be always present, and their power must pervade every treatment of the work which is built upon them. But they need not be de liberately stated anew each year. The "Lyman-Beecher Lectureship" in Yale College was founded to supplement the regular course of instruction in Theology with the suggestions of those actively engaged in ministerial work; and hence its range is limited, and the work of the Lecturer par takes largely of personal experience and observations. The writer has been, during their preparation and delivery, so constantly pressed with ecclesiastical duties, that he has had little time to seek authorities or to cultivate elegance of style.
