This early work by Anna Katharine Green was originally published in 1883 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'X Y Z' is one of Green's novels of crime and mystery. Anna Katharine Green was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1846. She aspired to be a writer from a young age, and corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson during her late teens. When her poetry failed to gain recognition, Green produced her first and best-known novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878). Praised by Wilkie Collins, the novel was year's bestseller, establishing Green's reputation. Green wrote at a time when fiction, and especially crime fiction, was dominated by men. However, she is now credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the trope of the recurring detective.

She turned heads in London, sipped absinthe in Tunis, and debated philosophy on the Left Bank of Paris. When she returns home to New York with a smuggled copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover in her bag, her father, the NYPD’s Inspector Thumm, is quite unprepared to handle her. At first, it seems they have nothing in common—but the two soon discover a shared appetite for murder. When a corrupt senator is stabbed to death in his study, Patience can’t resist hunting for the killer. With the help of her father’s old friend Drury Lane, the legendary Shakespearean actor, she will find that all the exotic cities of the world can’t offer anything as exciting as a New York homicide.

Filled with the bestselling, award-winning author's trademark wordplay and inventive storytelling, here is the dizzyingly entertaining, wickedly humorous story of a mysterious stranger whose sudden appearance during a family’s summer holiday transforms four variously unhappy people. Each of the Smarts—parents Eve and Michael, son Magnus, and the youngest, daughter Astrid—encounter Amber in his or her own solipsistic way, but somehow her presence allows them to see their lives (and their life together) in a new light. Smith’s narrative freedom and exhilarating facility with language propel the novel to its startling, wonderfully enigmatic conclusion.

"Sometimes in the course of his experience, a detective, while engaged in ferreting out the mystery of one crime, runs inadvertently upon the clue to another. But rarely has this been done in a manner more unexpected or withattendant circumstances of greater interest than in the instance I am now about to relate. For some time the penetration of certain Washington officials had been baffled by the clever devices of agang of counterfeiters who had inundated the western portion of Massachusetts with spurious Treasury notes. Some of the best talent of the Secret Service had been expended upon the matter, but with no favorable result, when, one day, notice was received at Washington that a number of suspicious-looking letters, addressed to the simple initials, X. Y. Z., Brandon, Mass.,were being daily forwarded through the mails of that region; and it being deemed possiblethat a clue had at last been offered to the mystery in hand, I was sent northward to investigate."
