DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis thesis which is entitled "Disarmament and development: the quest for global security", attempts to deal not only with the issues related to disarmament, (particularly non-nuclear disarmament) development and security (especially in the Third World), but attempts to highlight links between these concepts. The thesis aims to demonstrate the futility of expecting greater expenditure on arms to provide greater security. The futility of trying to achieve security through military means alone is emphasized. There is a hypothesis with three essential components which the thesis tries to validate. Firstly, the assumption that excessive military spending can be detrimental to global security, secondly, the world, the Third World in particular, has experienced consequential diversion of resources through excessive military expenditure, and thirdly, that Third World weapons production has not provided an adequate solution.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis paper reviews the origins of disarmament-development advocacy, examines some of the efforts to establish a link, including UN studies, and reviews the debate at the 1987 International Conference on the Relationship between Disarmament and Development. This look at the 1987 UN Conference reveals the various national points of view about this relationship, and provides a window on the larger international tensions that are at the root of much of international relations today. The examination ends with a look at Canada's position in the debate.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThere has now been more than a decade of conceptual work, policy development, and operational activity in the field of security sector reform (SSR). To what extent has its original aim, to support and facilitate development, been met? The various contributions to this book address this question, offering a range of insights on the theoretical and practical relevance of the security-development nexus in SSR. They examine claims of how and whether SSR effectively contributes to achieving both security and development objectives. In particular, the analyses presented in the book provide a salutary lesson that development and security communities need to take each other's concerns into account when planning, implementing, and evaluating their activities. The book offers academics, policy-makers, and practitioners within the development and security communities relevant lessons, suggestions, and practical advice for approaching SSR as an instrument that serves both security and development objectives.
