Perpetual economic growth is physically impossible on a planet with finite resources. This publication sets out the UN's annual analysis of current trends and emerging policy issues in the world economy. The first part of the survey looks at the global economic position in 2003, the delayed recovery following the earlier global economic downturn, and the factors likely to determine its course in the near term. The second section examines the links between economic policies and poverty reduction strategies in the light of the Millennium Development Goals. Issues considered include: a framework for evaluating relationships between development, economic policy and poverty; macroeconomic and trade policies; market-based approaches to rural development in sub-Saharan Africa; and poverty in transition countries.
