DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book seeks to bring coherence to two of the most studied periods in British history, Caroline non-conformity (pre-1640) and the British revolution (post-1642). It does so by focusing on the pivotal years of 1638–44 where debates around non-conformity within the Church of England morphed into a revolution between Parliament and its king. Parliament, saddled with the responsibility of re-defining England’s church, called its Westminster assembly of divines to debate and define the content and boundaries of that new church. Typically this period has been studied as either an ecclesiastical power struggle between Presbyterians and independents, or as the harbinger of modern religious toleration. This book challenges those assumptions and provides an entirely new framework for understanding one of the most important moments in British history.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis particular work by Gifford contains six pieces now updated into current modern print. The first work is worth the cost of the volume itself. It is his treatise on The Great Mystery of God’s Providence, on Genesis 45:8, concerning the historical narrative of Joseph coming to power in Egypt by God’s providence. He particularly deals with the question, “To what degree does the holy and righteous God make use of the evil actions of wicked men and devils, without any impeachment of his righteousness and holiness?” This is a wonderful and masterful treatise that will expand your view of the great mystery of God’s providence in the world, not only in Joseph’s time, but throughout all of redemptive history, including our own time. In his second piece, he covers James 2:26, “…so faith without works is dead,” while comparing both Paul’s use of justification by faith, and James’ use of justification by works. In his third sermon on James 3, he covers the manner in which the Christian’s speech ought to glorify God, and how, very often, that it does not. This is especially proven out by dealing with Christians in the church, where out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. In his fourth piece, he demonstrates the need and virtue of true fortitude to the glory of God. In this, he considers the strength and vigor of the Christian in all they do in zeal for the glory of Christ. In his fifth piece on Psalm 133:1 he covers the need and commendation of unity in the church, the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace, as set down by David in the Psalm, and echoed in Ephesians by Paul. His final piece is an explanation of the parable of the sower from Matt. 13:1-9, teaching that in the innumerable multitude that came to hear Christ’s heavenly doctrine, the Savior shows that out of this great number of people that were so zealous and traveled so far, there were three groups out of four that did not profit by his teaching and were therefore still creatures under damnation. Only one group of the four were true hearers. In all these works Gifford is very easy to read, yet, exegetically sound and practically deep.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDivine meditation on the word of God is a lost art and science in the spiritual disciplines. Christians are often content to read a little and pray a little. They often have little to no strategy for godly meditation. This is where William Bridge will come in. He will not only show the work and way of divine meditation, but he will initially set forth its sweetness. He teaches that this spiritual discipline is the Christian’s daily way of exercising himself in godliness and walking with God, and that such a walk is sweet. This walking is a picture of persistent communion with Jesus Christ, and is eminently sweet in its applications to the soul. Bridge’s main text is, “My meditation of him shall be sweet,” (Psalm 104:34), setting forth the doctrine that it is a sweet thing for a gracious soul to meditate on God. He shows the true nature and notion of meditation, how and in what respects a man may meditate on God, and how it is that meditation is a sweet thing, and profitable for the Christian. In his second part, in the work and manner which godly meditation ought to be accomplished, he answers some objections. He demonstrates that it is the Christian’s duty to meditate on God and the things of God, that it is a duty for every day, how to rightly meditate to make it profitable (with some rules to that end) and then concludes with arguments and motives to press all Christians to the regular and consistent practice of godly meditation. This work is not a scan or facsimile, and has been updated in modern English for easy reading. It also has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOne of the more exciting prophecies concerning the Messiah is Isaiah 9:6, and it is very full and very pregnant in its meaning. Here we read the well-known nativity verse concerning the advent of the Messiah as a child born, (his blessed incarnation), and then the varied designations given to that child in his titles. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." There are seven designations in this verse, (including being, 1) born a child and 2) being a son), all of which could be turned in books themselves (and have been). To choose one title to speak on is very difficult. Jeremiah Burroughs, in this work, has chosen the term, "wonderful," the third in the list, to consider. This work by Burroughs will help the Christian discern some of the sparks of Christ's wonder in his various offices and works. Jesus is truly wonderful. From Isaiah 9:6 he will cover that Christ is the great wonder of the world. That Christ is wonderful in his offices of Prophet, Priest and King. That Christ is wonderful in his miracles. That Christ is wonderful in his death, resurrection, ascension and present intercession. That Christ is wonderful in the glory of the Father (in two parts) and then concludes with an application. This work is a great encouragement to have our eyes set on the wonders of Christ, and to contemplate daily the person and work of Christ, as God has given us his word to discern him and see him as wonderful.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTo encourage God’s people, we present this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster on Meditation. Meditation is essential for a healthy walk with Christ and growth in grace. Charles Spurgeon introduces this subject with a helpful overview of the importance, practice, and benefits of biblical meditation. Thomas Watson defines what it is. Thomas Manton is convinced meditation is a biblical duty, and he tells us why. What is the nature of meditation? Isaac Ambrose answers that and describes the time, place, and matter of that holy practice. William Bates beautifully instructs us in occasional meditation, focusing on God’s creation, and George Swinnock offers five descriptions of solemn and set meditation on sacred subjects. Are there real dangers in neglecting this holy act of deep thinking? Edmund Calamy lists twelve! And they are sobering. John Owen, a deeply spiritually-minded pastor and theologian, presents us with practical helps for meditating upon God, and then A. W. Pink meticulously shows us how to approach a biblical text so that we can chew the Bread of Life. Are you new to meditation and wonder what to meditate about? In a second article, Thomas Watson gives a beautiful panorama of biblical themes to fix our hearts on, starting with God in eternity, progressing to Christ in history, and extending to heaven and hell. Then, Jonathan Edwards urges us to show our love to Christ; he does so by giving us a wonderful description of His loveliness. Spurgeon, a great advocate and practitioner of meditation, closes this issue by instructing us with sweet meditations of Jesus Christ our Lord. And how precious they are! Be forewarned: meditation is hard in our too-busy, distracted world; but this FGB is a brief “how-to” that we pray will fan the flames of your heart to seek the glory of Christ in Scripture and to love Him as never before.
